i used to have to drive along with an old white van driver when his gout acted up.... it was terrifying (i mean the dude was old.. and the van white)

i was just along to take care of the legwork... in my 3 trips with him we hit a cyclist, ran over a statue (well.. bumped it hard enough to knock it off its base.... right in town centre too) scraped a couple fences, knocked over a bin... and broke damn near every traffic law..

it was when he was driving along at about 60 mph phone in one hand scanner in the other only steering when we’re about to go off the road one side or another that i realized im fatalistic..

if its my time its my time i guess

Wasn’t the Atlas the one that had exactly the same front track as the UK tramway gauge, and once they “got into the groove” they ended up having to go all the way to the tram depot because it was impossible to steer them?

I think the anecdote appeared somewhere years ago in an article by a former PR boss of Standard-Triumph.

I’m not sure, there are a few stories about several vehicles and tram lines for various reasons.

But the Standard/Leyland was sold as a Triumph in Canada as Standard didn’t have dealerships there.

Personally I can’t see how as tram lines (certainly the ones in my city before they were taken up) are/were recessed into the road.

I always thought that it sounded unlikely. However, tyres were much narrower then and also bias-ply – a lot less “flat” on the road than radials. Besides many streets still had cobblestones instead of tarmac.

Maybe it was an urban legend or just a tall tale by that man, but the way he explained it was pretty hilarious.

The old trams still operate in Blackpool south of me and while you may get a bicycle tyre in one of the grooves which are either side of each rail, I can’t see even getting a very early twentieth century (circa 1910-20) car tyre down them.

I suppose it happened once or twice where the rails left the asphalt or cobbled roads (many places still have cobbled roads here, the next street to mine is stipp cobbled as is the one at the bottom of my street) and it got back to them.

Nice story though.
