With the move to southern California coming next month, the requirement to have a winter beater is no more. This means I can focus on saving for my next obtainable dream car, which is a 964 C2 Targa. Probably a few years off from buying one, but I like to do my research well in advance. Mainly what I’m looking for is information on reliability, livability, and ease of maintenance, but any and all information is appreciated.

Make sure your indie mechanic has a German name.

Are you mechanically inclined or flush with cash? Assuming you know the Porsche market has gone bonkers and a lot of what is being sold have real, serious issues.

I’ve done a complete drive-train swap on a 90's Impreza, and I know their boxer engines well enough to do a complete tear down and rebuild. I figured with the 964 being older, it would be a simpler engine to work on. Plan would be to do a full tear down of the engine and transmission while the body is off to get painted and fitted for a half cage.

The plan would be to do all the mechanical work myself. I’ve got a bunch of experience working with boxer engines from my Subarus. As long as an issue isn’t a complicated electrical one I’m confident I could sort it out on my own.

This is the Porsche I’d get. But maybe red or white.

Honestly, I really don’t have anything constructive to add. But the 964 is what was new when I grew up so it is kind of burned into my brain as what I think of when I think of when I think Porsche. The purist in me might go for a regular coupe. But my love of oddball and my love of the targa top in my C4 as a way to get an open air experience without having to go full convertible would probably go for the targa.
(I don’t really care for convertibles [unless they’re roadster-only cars])

Not all that helpful and just opinion, but I’ve never liked the look of this model, preferring the Carrera model just prior to the introduction of the 964. I suspect that’s just because of the time in which I grew up, learning to drive in the early ‘80s. The flat wheels and restyled body just remind me of those half-assed updates to older designs to make them seem fresh, like what Ferrari did to the 308 and Testarossa. I know Porsche was trying to make it look more like the 959, but the result was half-baked and not successful IMHO. At least they got their mojo back when it came to the 993, making that final iteration timeless.

Agreed. The 3.2 is my favorite short hood.

The Porsche 964 is what lead me to my love of Porsche in general. One of the business owners in my small northern Wisconsin town had one and I drooled over it. I can actually pinpoint the moment I fell in love. I was at a gas station and he pulled into, as I stood there the spoiler retracted into the body. That was also the first time I had ever seen a retractable spoiler. Game over. I was in love.
I have no first hand knowledge of reliability or anything, but I do know that between Pelican Parts and Rennlist, you should be able to find out literally anything you want to know. Personally, I’m hoping the bubble pops so I can get into one someday. Alternatively, I hope I advance enough in my career that I don’t care about the bubble....
