In the US, the factors that make passenger trains a crappy situation, are the same things that make freight trains a killer deal.

Speed: freight can go slow with no issue. People don’t want to wait.

Volume vs. stops: Many small people wanting to go many different places. Large amount of cars going to the same places.

Timeliness: A load of coal is delayed 12 hours, not usually a huge deal. A passenger train is delayed 12 hours, major deal!

Payments: Processing hundreds of small payments. Processing a handful of commercial vendors.
