Seems like I can get the size I want, with 4 doors, and not get the Tacoma tax. What do I need to worry about?

Well they are nice to drive, I had a 2001 crew XEV6. Mine did get an issue where I would push the clutch in and it would still cut stall. Took them a week to figure out why it happened, some sensor. If I didn’t move off Oahu I would have kept it, they drive nice, manual was good on gas.

v6 auto from 05-10 ish had auto transmission issues. An auxiliary trans cooler is supposed to help with that because it isn’t running the transmission fluid into a plastic radiator tank.

I have a 2005 Pathfinder (same mechanicals basically)- if you look at the 2005+, that’s what has the VQ40.
What mkbruin says bears repeating - you NEED to get that external trans cooler right away. If it fails, you’re looking at a few grand in repairs, depending.
Other than that, my Pathfinder has been great - for 168k miles. Very reliable.

yeah, if it fails and coolant mixes w/trans fluid, the trans is toast.

For the newer models, steer clear of automatics between 2005 and 2008, which have many problems (rad leaking into trans [auto only], premature timing chain guide wear, bad fuel sending unit). The sweet spot is 2011-2012; nothing wrong with 13+ unless you don’t like backup cameras. All the non-supercharged ones prior to 2005 are solid (the added power is nicer but at the cost of reliability). The VQ engine gives the newer trucks almost double the power.
NISMO, Off-Road, and PRO-4X (same trim, different name depending on year) have rear lockers and slightly lower gearing in auto (moderately lower in manual) and either hill start/clutch cancel on the manual or hill descent on auto.

avoid diesels (if sold there)
