Is there an equivalent of Goonet for ordinary Euro cars one can’t easily find in North America? Asking for a friend...

Yes, and auto24 as well.

I’m hoping to find something pan-European. Searching in French I can do, German i muddle through, but I’m not looking to learn Spanish, Polish, etc.

Hmm, mobile.de and autoscout24 tend to cover multiple countries, however, people tend to stick to their own language in the description (especially the southern European countries).

Check Leboncoin for French classifieds.

Agreed, though Leboncoin is France’s answer to Craigslist, so a lot of terrible ads.

As KnowsAboutCars pointed out, for France there’s Leboncoin.fr , which is France’s Craigslist, and sadly the most used platform to sell cars. For Germany, the major sites are mobile.de and autoscout24.de, but you might find interesting stuff on ebay-kleinanzeigen.de , which is probably the most visited craigslist-like site in Germany.

AutoScout24 and Mobile both have an English option. The ad text itself will obviously still be in the native language, but you can browse the websites in English just fine. Options the seller checked, like power windows or AC, will be in English too.

What are you looking for?

Finding things in German is OK. I’m thinking about selling my 4Runner and going back in time. The picture I shared looks a lot like what I want.

The “perfect” find would be a 1990-91 Golf 2 in red, 5 doors, manual, with the 1.6L. But I found a two-tone blue that’s seriously sexy:

This red one has the 1.2L but it’s extra clean: https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=249290313

Nice. My first car, which has been parked for years but which I still own, is a mk2 ‘91 Golf. 1.3L 4-speed manual. First owner (family). Anyway, I’m located mostly in Germany and sometimes (currently) in my native the Netherlands, so if you need some help, let me know. Do you want one shipped to the US?

Can I ask why the 1.6? Why not an 1.8? Or the 1.3?

This 1.6L seems the perfect one for you, but it’s a rather pricey for a mk2 with the 1.6. https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=247306053

Kinja'd!!!

This ticks all boxes as well, although it does have rather many kms and some easly reversible modifications: https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=248370302

Kinja'd!!!

This one ticks all boxes too (plus no rust and new belts for a 3 digit price), but is only 3 doors. Located close to me (this week). https://link.marktplaats.nl/m1209004644

And then I opened ebay kleinanzeigen. There are really a million of these cars left. Not as many (and not as cheap!) as 5-10 years ago, but still. They’re rather tough.

This is a 1.6 manual, but it’s lowered 4 cm and there are seat covers. https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/golf-2-volkswagen/723917633-216-1752

Kinja'd!!!

This 5-door 1.6L is utterly perfect for what you’re looking for (only 45k kms!), but priced insanely at €7.8k. https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/volkswagen-golf-gl-1-6-1-hand-scheckheft-sammlerfahrz-top-/724131812-216-1142

No such thing as a 1.2L Golf mk2, that’s a 1.3L. The power output matches it. Looks fine though.

I got a bit carried away and continued searching. And didn’t even start looking at autoscout24. In random order.

1.6L, €1200. Looks very clean. https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/vw-golf-ii-1600cm-mit-70-ps-d3-norm-farbe-rot/695519334-216-4217

Not a 1.6, but a legitimate Golf Country. In red, 5-door manual. AWD 1.8L. €6500  https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/volkswagen-golf-ii-syncro-country-1-8/688540048-216-8478

Kinja'd!!!

A 1.3 that looks to be in great condition. €2300  https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/volkswagen-golf-ll-gl-1-3-l-nz-guter-zustand/696531327-216-2804

Kinja'd!!!

A 1.6 that’s (probably) cheap. Price is ‘negotiable’. https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/vw-golf-2-madison-tausch-verkauf/715126310-216-351

Kinja'd!!!

A 1.3 that’s been ‘completely rebuilt’ in 2016. €1999. What’s up with that roof?  https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/volkswagen-golf-2-neuaufbau-2016/670739714-216-239

Another Golf Synchro. €8800. https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/golf-syncro-country-top-zustand-allradantrieb/705131656-216-9014

Kinja'd!!!

A 2nd owner 1.3L that has very low kms and looks very clean and original. It still has the ‘old’ plates, which were last handed out in the 90s if I’m not mistaken. €2390 https://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat/volkswagen-golf-cl-2-hand-orginalzustand-daleiden/233121043.html

Kinja'd!!!

A 1.3L that looks new. And pricey at €8900. 35k kms though. https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/golf-ii-cl-37-000km-sammlerstueck-einmaliger-zustand/704422970-216-3260

Kinja'd!!!

A 1.6L, don’t know what’s going on with those stickers though. €1800  https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/vw-golf-ii-bj-91-bald-oldtimer-guter-zustand-tuev-neu-servo-g-kat/704231013-216-22580

Kinja'd!!!

I like this 1.6L the most, because it’s a Pasadena version. Just like my own mk2. Same interior too. Not cheap though. €3950 https://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat/volkswagen-golf-1-6-pasadena-ingolstadt/250578703.html

Please stop! I’m already weak, the temptation is too much!

I’m still just kicking the idea around, but i had one of these in Germany in 2006 and would love to have one again. I’m a bit nostalgic. If it’s reliable enough my wife would even daily drive it to work. Maybe?

I want the 1.6 because it’s bigger. I don’t recall if mine was the 1.6 or 1.3 to be honest, and I don’t have any documents to prove it either way.

It would be shipped to Canada. My target price is really 1500 € or less, but that depends. In any case, the purchase would likely wait until spring next year.

As someone who spends hours poring over used classifieds internationally, I feel your struggle.
