Interesting fact: Gus Grissom was born and raised 15 minutes from where I work. His museum was also completely refurbished just a couple years ago.

See those little islands off the coast of Long Beach CA? Island Chaffee, Island Grissom and Island White.
Whenever I’m down in Belmont Shores for the car show I always look for these islands and think about Apollo 1. I may have only been two weeks old when this tragedy occurred, but I still think about those that sacrificed everything in order to make the moon landing possible.

Barely old enough to recall, but surely aware enough to remember. That moon landing did not come easily.

I was listening to NPR and they talked about the accident. One expert suggested that if not for the fire they may not have realized some of the design flaws (100% oxygen atmosphere, hatch that opened inwards and took a long time to open), which likely would have resulted in an accident taking place in space, possibly resulting in the end of the space program.

Yep. A lot of good developments came from the investigation. Just a shame that it took loosing some really good guys to get there.
