The amusing thing is the NC is widely regarded as the softest, sloppiest Miata due to being the heaviest. Best at being a car, worst at being a Miata. The “best” Miata would be either an ND or an NB2 with the VVT engine and sport suspension.

If you wanna know why people think Miatas are slow, go drive a 1.6 liter NA

I like the nd, but I don’t think I can afford that anytime soon.

The nb2 with sports suspension sounds like a worse daily driver.

nc is the best compromise!

I don’t know, my 1.6 feels fine as well.

Lightest Miata for the win.

I actually fit in the new Miata without the top of the window being in the middle of my line of view like the Mazdaspeed Miata.

I’ve driven a buddy’s caged/tuned/harnessed/exhaust/intake/lightness-added STi and it fucked my face. The only thing more stupid that I’ve driven was a 2017 Corvette Z06 which is the only car I’ve ever driven that had way, way too much power for the chassis. Scariest car I’ve ever been behind the wheel of.

That STI is quick, I tried to chase it once.

Like all Miata problems, a quick check to FM can sort that right out.

I almost feel ashamed for moving to an NC from my old NA but I am 6'2" and 225lbs....

I loved my NA Miata... Then I drove an NC. Then I says to the NA, I says “farewell, Felicia.” My biggest beef with the NA is I never felt anything but a dead fish handshake from the steering wheel. It never communicated anything. The NC’s steering feels so alive by comparison.

If you think it has too much power for the chassis, you just need to take a few driving classes. Trust me on this.

The nb2 with sports suspension sounds like a worse daily driver.

The sport suspension is not racecar stiff or anything. The shocks are just Bilsteins with more aggressive valving than the base model shocks.

Ironicially, most people who upgrade the NA and NB to stiffer springs (and shocks) find the overall ride quality is better. The rear suspension doesn’t have a long travel and tends to bottom out on the bump stops a lot. Stiffer springs keeps the car off the bump stops better and so the ride is actually less harsh.

I mean, it’s even in your name. “With great power comes great traction issues”. You can’t just punch it on the highway and take off because the tires don’t like that. That is 99% of the fun of a Corvette in Kansas (because we have nothing but straight roads) is slowly passing someone in the left lane then putting the hammer down and chuckling at how ludicrously fast they disappear into your rearview mirror.

To be fair, the NA is nearing 30 years old. It’s going to be a hell of a lot less communicative without new suspension, bushings, tie rods, ball joints, etc.

Slapping a bunch of performance parts on a car doesn’t mean the car was good to start with, it just means you bought good parts. I could put thousands in performance parts into a Chevy Cavalier until I end up with a good car but that doesn’t mean that what I started with was even remotely competent.

It’s the same reason I hate all the people who insist Panthers and Volvos are the end-all-be-all because if you throw enough money at them they’re eventually fun. That’s not a good car. That’s idiocy. The same amount of money to make one of those awful boats fun could build the world’s best f-body/foxbody/miata/s-chassis

I can guarantee you, though, as a former Z06 owner, that when you know what you’re doing, you can punch it and control it and not be scared. That’s all I’m a sayin’!
