My guess: maybe it’s a valved system and all exhaust goes through the single red exhaust in full angry mode?

Red = intake
Silver = exhaust
Why does it have to suck air from the front of the car and come out the back? WHY NOT BOTH IN THE BACK?!!
muah muah haaa!

Here’s what’s going on here: every civic hatch you’ve ever seen is going to have a CME with a useless red center pipe once this car launches. I can hear the exhaust shops oiling the pipe bending equipment as we speak.

It’s a fuel dump output like on the F-111. I mean, duh.

No this I could get behind (the idea, not the fuel dump).
Hope things are good, Gamecat!

lol I have no idea, but I’m instantly reminded of a phrase that my Father uses frequently when talking about something he does not want to deal with. “I need that like I need an extra asshole.”

Maybe it somehow tunes the exhaust note to sound all snarly and pissed off. That center pipe has a different resonator attached to it versus the larger cans on the other outlets.
Kinda weird, though. It looks like all 3 are fed from a single pipe. That would be the bottle neck. Can’t imagine that there is enough flow at the end of that thing to justify all the extra plumbing...

That’s clearly the primary reason, but it seems like they’ve actually done some plumbing to try to back up the design decision.

Well there is only one pipe back from the engine, so its either a bypassed loudener or fake.

they already have flap and stuff in the exhaust system. its not to much of a stretch to this I dont think

Yeah, that’s my thought: the outer two have the extra mufflers and chambers to do away with drone and most of the noise, and the middle is just tuned to be wicked sounding.

Or it could just be a pipe organ. Plays “Hot Cross Buns” when vtec kicks in.

Seems to be the prior, as it’s not just floating there between the other two (the first Lexus F was the worst offender here, I think).

Seems like almost almost all sporty cars above a certain price point will have valved exhaust before long.

I agree, but at least their cars seem to be getting better to drive in recent years (from what I can infer from reviews of newer Accords & Civics). Supra is on its way. Just need an S2000 successor...

It’s most likely there to yield maximum flow and noise at higher rpms and in higher gears, but to minimize exhaust drone in lower gears and rpm.
That’s a problem with putting high flow exhausts on these little turbo four cylinders. They can drone like crazy in certain rpm ranges.
My Golf R had a valved exhaust, and for a while I experimented with crimping the vacuum hose to leave the exhaust flap open. Oh god, it would drone so bad on the highway. Almost all of the aftermarket exhausts except for APR/Corsa (which was crazy expensive) had this problem, so I stuck with a stock exhaust uncrimped the vacuum hose.

Drone is no bueno for any car that spends any time on the highway.

Before I bought my WRX, I drove one with an aftermarket pipe. The drone was so loud that I couldn’t hear anyone speaking in the back seat. I’m glad that I drove it so I know that I will need to be very selective if I decide to add an aftermarket exhaust.
