You know...I’ve never done this trail, for some reason I’ve just never bothered but now I kinda need to do it to see what kind of a challenge it really is. I realize that, like all slickrock trails, there are many ways to do it and some will be much harder than others, I also realize that traction is 100% not a problem on “slickrock” (unless it’s wet or muddy) but even still I know it’s not a pushover trail.

It rates a 6 on the cruise Moab scale, which is a fairly accurate scale in my experience. What’s a 6 mean?

“Roads are difficult with considerable erosion damage repaired just enough to be passable. Water in excess of 12" is possible with mud conditions. Steps not exceeding 24". Tall tires (33" plus) and traction aid devices (lockers, limited slips, A-TRAC) are recommended. A winch would be a plus. Enhanced suspension travel and ground clearance are helpful. Excellent driving skills are recommended.”

*Warning* the music starts out kinda bad and moves into horid about half way in.

Moab. It’s what makes a Subaru a Subaru.

Checked in the comments, did not see the dude going up and down Hell’s Revenge in his Crown Vic.

Here it is now:

Sooooooooooooooo many people underestimate what Subies can do offroad. We used to wheel our’s and it was amazing (1980 GL Wagon). I have had many others but never done this with one.

Makes me wonder if my 6th one will be a Legacy with a lift......?

There are a couple times he goes “off” the trail, but Hell’s Revenge isn’t particularly difficult IMHO. CJ5s and 7s have been doing it open/open on 31s since it opened. Most of the popular Moab trails are very easy with 1-2 “options” or a step section that make it harder. Hell, you can do 90% of Kane Creek Canyon in any front or rear wheel drive car with a little ground clearance.

Imprezzive! His driving was actually pretty good and accommodating to the front overhang of the car. I used to offroad my Subaru XT (flying wedge) all the darn time and it was impressive even on 13" all season tires. Having a rear limited slip and a 50-50 torque distribution does wonders for traction.

based on the video, it does seem less about clearance and approach/departure angles than it is about grip and traction. the light lift deals easily with the clearance issues, I am pretty impressed about its ability to get traction without legitimate lockers.

Yeah, I am actually pretty impressed with how well the TC worked. The nice thing about the subi system compared to other crossovers is that its AWD system can send 100% to either axle if needed and because its designed to handle more torque its a more robust system that can take more abuse without overheating (unlike modern PTO systems that aren’t meant to be used full time)

there’s certainly the DCCD to control the centre “diff”, and can put an LSD in the rear, just not sure the subaru should cope as well as it did in that video when wheels were off the ground.

The DCCD isn’t an option on this model though, just a standard open diff with clutch style LSD function, but, it has the ability to fully lock like the DCCD, just without the control and the helical center diff. As for the rear LSD, Im not sure if it was an option on this model, it looks like its entierly brakes based. I’ve also come to the conclusions that the sway bars were out.

I was just trying to imagine how it could have achieved it with suby options. clearly there’s a lift. I think you’re right about the sway bars being out or disconnected. impressive articulation.

certainly for an already lifted subaru. I’ve looked under a few lifted ones, and the axles look like they’re already struggling.

I would guess longer axles or they might just pull out of the diff.

I’m impressed that the transmission didn’t overheat and spew its guts all over the place - assuming an auto here. A manual in that car wouldn’t have made that without going thru 2 or 3 clutches.

I’d be curious to see how a relatively high FWD with good tires (a Beetle Dune or something like that) would handle it...

Seriously, apart from the size of the obstacles, this trail looks pretty doable.

Still surprised you guys never picked up a legit Moab Subaru... Daily driven, family hauler yet wheels Moab (Lockhart ain’t a slouch run).

functional mods (gearing, real dual range, CLSD rear diff, tube bumper) with the simpler OBish basic lift.
