I want an XJ. I always have and I always will. However, crap are they expensive. Blue book for these things range from triple digits to $2000, but everyone everywhere is asking $4000+. I just saw a dealership posting for a 1999 Cherokee with 125,000 miles for almost $8k. A guy on craigslist has a 1997 for sale with 107,000 miles for $7,000 (blue book is $1200...). What is a reasonable offer for an XJ with ~150,000 miles? I do believe some of the examples I see are worth a few thousand, so what is a reasonable price I should expect to pay?

In Georgia a Cherokee with 150k and 4x4 would probably bring around $4,000. You could probably find one cheaper but the condition will be worse.

It is hard to say. I bought one with a transmission problem( cracked case) for $250 and fixed it for another 250. Drove it a couple years, beat it up then scrapped it.
Nice ones go for around $3500 and are approaching 200K miles. Some will come with lifts and tires for $4000. Just depends on how the market it for it.

I once found a good 2 door for $2k (but didn’t buy). Now all remaining 2 doors are going for 3+k in good condition.

Ive owned two and i still regret selling my first one that (pic below). The second i got as a winter/woods beater to keep my BRZ out of the salt.

I’ve always loved them, but never got one. Now I’m in a more financially stable situation (for a college kid), and am looking at picking one up as a backup vehicle, both for fun times and to be there if/when my 200,000 miles mk4 Jetta bites the dust. I found a seller of a 1996 with 144k miles willing to part with it for $2200. Hopefully it’s not a pile of junk.

Check the front floors, tailgate and the rockers for rust/patching, they seem to get hit there (at least in PA).

From what I've seen since joining Jeep Facebook pages it would be wise to buy as stock as possible and as rust free as possible. At that I still wouldn't pay a ton for it.

I’m in Ohio, so I’m sure they’re decently rusty. They look fine in pictures, so hopefully they’re not too far gone. Floor I will definitely need to check. it has a 3" lift, so maybe that keeps some of the salt/water off them?

I hear you there. What are your thoughts on one with a mild lift? One I’m looking at has a 3" lift and newer tires. 3" makes it seem like it was done for show/capability rather than anything hardcore. I think 3" is perfect on an XJ (see lead pic), and since I would want that much of a lift anyway, and since both stock and lifted are the same price, I’m considering it (especially at the $2200 he’s agreed to if everything works well).

I bought mine for $1,500 as a 2wd automatic with 180,000 miles and that heinous butterscotch tan interior. It’s gone through some changes, but the 4x4 conversion is stupid easy, so don’t discount the 2-wheelers.

3" is what I'm looking into. It seems like that would be perfect for driving everyday and good for slightly larger tires. $2200 doesn't seem like a bad price either.
