I can’t not think of John Stamos whenever I hear that song.

False, I am from a Kokomo.

More realistically, Indiana isn’t a real place.

I actually saw the Kokomo-era Beach Boys perform. And it was a very rare show with Brian Wilson actually playing with them.

Another bit of Kokomo trivia... they filmed that video somewhere near Tampa/Orlando. They rented most of the instruments in the video for the shoot. My friend Keith has owned that red drum set since the day after the shoot. When it was returned after filming, all the drums, the hardware, everything, had sand it. The store they rented it from charged them for the damage and practically wrote off the kit, which was/is as very high end, expensive kit (several thousands of dollars). A friend of Keith’s who worked at the store called him and told him about this sweet deal, so long as he could clean it all out. So he bought it for a few hundred dollars, took it completely apart, cleaned it, and reassembled it. He’s toured the country with it, recorded albums with it, and still lugs it around to gigs to this day. And he’s proud as fuck to have the Kokomo drum set.

So was that where you went to get away from it all?

Cool story about the video and such!

Yes. The show was a 4th Of July free event at the old Tampa Stadium, put on by a local radio station. Also on the bill were Starship and Whitney Houston. July 4th, 1987. I was 11 years old.

Just found this shity pic on the web from it, with Brian Wilson walking at the front of the stage.

I read that Brian played this show with them as they were about to do a tour of Europe and he wanted to make sure the rest of the band had their shit together. As you can see from the picture, they played during the day. They promptly left Tampa and flew to a second gig that evening, in Austin, TX. Brian was at the second show, but only performed the two or three songs of the encore. I, and the tens of thousands of people at the Tampa show, saw what might have been one of the only times Brian sang Kokomo at a concert of that era.

Anyway, enough of my encyclopedic knowledge of music. I’ll leave you with a picture I took of my friend Keith and his Kokomo drum set.

The Kokomo drum set make an appearance last night. The Posies played at my friend’s record store and used the kit!
