Just watched the excellent documentary “Fastball” on Netflix, and it brought back a flood of memories. Watching Dodger games with dad, stories of Koufax playing, Vin Scully, playing pickup ball and little league, watching the ‘89 earthquake “Freeway Series” and feeling the damn earthquake as I watched the balcony fall on TV from 250 miles away, actually witnessing Bonds vs. Randy Johnson... how the hell did I not stay into it? New mission: pay attention to baseball, and teach my kids to play. I still have my Orel Hershiser glove somewhere, wonder if it still fits.

Baseball is great again. Loved it as a kid, stopped paying attention to it in my late teens, then started getting in to it again about 10 years ago. It's now the only sport that I can stand to follow. And its a great time for anyone to get into it. Who's your team?

I grew up a Dodger fan from my dad and his family, I was inseparable from an LA hat for most of my pre-teens. But my mom had a bay area family connection so the Giants were always second and if not them the A’s. As an adult I generally dislike Southern California, but I have to stick with the blue. Too many Scully games to turn on them. Have to say though, the Giants returning to form in the last few years has helped rope me back in slowly. I could tell I missed it, you know?

I lost the love after the Strike in 94. Actually seeing the Cubs at +.600 in September has my interest but not enough to jump onto the bandwagon.
Plus I’m a Sox fan..

I think I was more or less out of fucks to give by ‘94, but I remember being upset by that. I’m a Dodger fan, and I want to see the Cubs do it. One of the things that documentary put in focus was how much great shit I’ve been privileged to see in the sport. It gave a new perspective, and how cool would it be to break that curse?Sorry about the Sox, um, hang in there?

We have been pretty lucky as fans. I filled the Baseball hole with something else so I really didn’t miss it. I guess? I celebrated when the Sox won the WS but was disappointed because the next day it was like no big deal. I bet Chicago will burn again if the Cubs actually take the Series.

I haven’t watched in ages, but it’s probably my favorite sport that requires the use of balls. Played a little summer league when I was a kid. Still miss all of the smells, dirt, grass, gloves. The Twinkies were my team, grew up watching Kirby Puckett and Chuck Knoblauch. Stopped watching around the time Torii Hunter and Johan Santana went away. Tough to stay in it when your team just gets worse and worse and throws away their best opportunities.

It’s an evocative thing, absolutely. Hard to ignore that draw. I was teaching my oldest a bit recently on the diamond nearby, and it kind of started to come back then.
I think I’ve got a couple of Puckett cards somewhere, I’ve got to dig out that shoebox.
I understand the turn-off when a team slumps though, in ball sports and racing. I guess if you keep the faith a bit it makes it that much more special when they get back to the top. Hard to endure in the meantime, but we can’t be a wagon jumper, right?

The hardest thing for me sticking with it was just life getting in the way. I love baseball, but there are other things I would rather do at this point. But if it’s on and I’m not busy you’re damn right I’ll watch. But next time I visit back home I want to get some Twinkies tickets. Still haven’t been to see them since the Metrodome collapsed.

Definitely not a lot of time for sportsball when you’re lifing, I feel that.

I didn’t start watching it until the 2004 playoffs, at age 18, out of sheer boredom. For some reason, I was hooked and I’ve been watching it since. I became an Orioles fan, because they were the only team that carried at the time (long story short, the first two seasons the Nationals were in DC, there was a dispute with the channel that carried their games). Unfortunately, the Orioles were in the midst of 14 straight losing seasons (1998-2011) but it’s just made the past five that much better to watch. I’ve gone to a couple of games in Baltimore, and a few of their minor league affiliates’ games. I pay much more attention to baseball than I do football, especially when the Orioles are in the playoff hunt as they are now.

I love watching baseball and right now it’s been very exciting because so many teams are so close to the playoffs.
I’m a rays fan (sadly) so my only joy has been watching them beat up these wild card contending teams to knock them out!
Dad is a Mets fan (and I enjoy watching them now) so it’s been great watching them get this far despite poor management and injuries.
