What’s with the mis-matched indicators?

On those tires, it probably doesn’t matter what engine is in there. TJs just don’t do fast.

Didn’t notice until just now...huh. money spent in fox stickers cut into the indicator budget I guess

You should sell a vynil decal of that. Jeep owners can put it on their floor pans, for when ego outstrips skill.

I’ve got two friends who’ve had 33s on 2.5L YJs. Do just fine unless it’s the interstate.

Oi, you! I’m about to get off work (and hence not back to Oppo til morning), but I thought you might be interested to know - the younger brother’s adapter ring, flywheel, and starter for putting a Benz diesel in a 109 Series arrived a couple of days ago. Haven’t done anything with them yet, but the bespoke parts for the job we’re not making are now at any rate in hand.

Didn’t do anything other than wonder what the starter was originally for, that is - turns out the conversion uses one for a toyota Cressida/HiAce/Rav4... and even Land Cruiser of certain years. Seems vaguely sordid.

Dunno I guess it was something off-the-shelf that fits easily. At least it’ll match the engine reliability! What was the cost of the adapter ring and flywheel?

Update for you. Apparently my 109 bulkhead isn’t swiss cheese and needs minor welding, which is nice.

I believe the adapter ring + adapter plate + starter + flywheel were something like $1500 all in, but I don’t know that for certain. The starter is a gear drive sort with minimal nose, which is needed for the application. Good news on the bulkhead - it might galvanize properly if the rust is minimal to none and you wish to try it. thebloody was saying favorable things about dipping ones bulkhead a few days ago...

I saw a picture of a Diesel Series Landie with “I can go slower if you’d like”.

Also those inductors are messing with me...

Not too bad all things considered. I’ve never seen the conversion before so I’d be interested in build pics. I’ve heard unfavourable things about hot dipping an already thin bulkhead, has he had his done? I was just going to get it welded cleaned red oxide-d and painted.

Had 31s on my 2.5 and that was slow as fuck.

Had 35s on my 4.0 and great. No problems following or even passing on the highways. But mine was a Sahara, so it was the 3.73 gear ratio so that really helped. Can't tell you what the gear ratio is on a sport 4.0. Google most likely can.

Yeah that 3.8 minivan engine in a heavier jeep.

The tj with the 4.0 is no race car, and is not trying to be. I went from a tj with a 2.5 to a tj with the 4.0. After driving a 2.5 everything feels like a race car.

Oh, the 2.5 is scary on the highway. Wouldn’t want one unless it was a farm truck or a swap recipient. The 4.0 and 3.6 are the only way to go, but I wouldn't put more than a 35 on the 4.0 without regearing.

The Benz engine in Series trick used to be a thing in South Africa, but the current kit, I’m only aware of the one man offering - a man in Virginia. A four cylinder pretty much drops in once you’ve got the ring, plate, and flywheel sorted, and the OM616 flywheel is common. On the other hand the OM617 (five cylinder) was never offered with a flywheel in the turbo version - ever - and the Euro market-only non-turbo has a flywheel that’s too long to be fit to a Rover (ring style). To compound things, the final balance on the fives was done with the flexplate (or flywheel) on, so rework of a Euro market flywheel is quite difficult. If I’m not mistaken, this trick uses the flexplate and adds the flywheel to it, so doesn’t spoil that.

It needs a couple of other things done: an edit to the oil pan, mount brackets, adapting to gauges, but between these parts and the SIII radiator (required for clearance) with electric fan we’re largely there.

I’m assuming you mean a thin bulkhead warps and twists beyond reason? I’m not sure Bloody cares as long as he can still bolt it on, as that’s what he mentioned. He was going to get his done at any rate - my local Series rebuilding man is, I think, not in favor for the ones he does, and the three bulkheads I rebuilt for ours are merely cleaned, sealed, and primered, so I’ve never actually seen one done.

I see BvdV somehow stumbled across a Sankey. Fantastic.
