I have a Ford Escape that ticking in at 120k miles, I drive a lot. I know there’s a hole in the exhaust and a few other problems so I’m probably going to go for a new one soon. In the mean time I have two tires that I just noticed are toast. I tend to replace two at a time.

My choices for tires are Evan’s Tire or Discount tire. Anybody like one over the other? Evans has some cheap tires like AutoGrip and Milestar but I’m wondering if they’re too cheap. I do drive a lot. Those come in around 80-100$ each. If I go to Discount I can get Michelin or Goodyear coming in around 130-150$ each.

I've been a discount tire customer for over 10 years now. Good selection, good prices and they include lifetime balancing and flat repairs. I've purchased at least 10 sets of tires and been very happy with there service.

Check on eBay too, you can get better pricing sometimes. They run specials. Discounttiredirect.com too. They will match tire rack prices too.

My A4 had some Milestar all-seasons on it when I got it and they weren’t bad at all, actually! Pretty low on grip, but not much worse than most all-seasons, and I tortured them quite a bit and they didn’t fail. I would totally go for them on a car that’s on its way out.

Huh, I thought Evans was only a local thing. I’ve totally wrote Evans off my list after witnessing a tech had allowed his wife/girlfriend run errands in a customers car while he changed her (girlfriend/wife) oil. I confirmed such fact when she returned moments prior to the vehicle owner arriving to pick up the car. On another note, Milestar’s have horribe wear. I think I had mine for about a year and a half before I had to replace them again (with frequent tire rotations and modest driving habits). Try TireRack — my sibling recently found a set of Kuhmo’s for about $175 after rebate. We usually then just take our tires to a mom and pop shop to have them mounted.

Thanks, I’m leaning towards them too.

I have to get the tires on ASAP, but thanks for the referense. I actually have the little wires sticking out of one. I feel so stupid waiting this long.

How said is this? I don’t really know. I think 16 but not sure. I haven’t changed the tire size since what comes stock on them due to having a habit of doing two at a time.

Are you in San Diego? Yeah, I was a little nervous about them but saw the low numbers... I hate to put too much into the car if I’m keeping it 6months - 1.5 years.

I just bought a set of BFG Radial T/As from Discount Tire and everything was done quickly and well. I put Michelins on my Mariner(Mercury’s version of the Escape) and they have been extremely happy with them.

I have never been unhappy with any Michelin tire I have ever owned.... but if you are looking for a deal I have had decent luck wit Kuhmos and Coopers too.

I am. I should also add that the Milestars not only became bald in a year and a half, but also were prone to losing small, pea-sized, chunks of rubber. If you’re not looking to keep the car for long, may I suggest the many used tire shops down in Chula Vista. You just need to know what you’re looking for, and to look at the manufacturing dates. Sometimes you score on quality name brand used tires for cheap, but other times you’re essentially paying a few dollars away from what you’d pay for a new set. The used tire shops are best for mounting and balancing for cheap, though.

I’m a firm believer in getting the best tires you can afford. The couple of times I went with cheap no name tires I regretted buying them.
