Well. I got the final payoff on the Leaf. $4,844.19. All I have to do is take it down to the local Nissan dealer and finalize the deal. I am sure they will probably try to tack on some sort of fees and there’s tax as well. Still it’s an ok deal and I am almost 100% sure I will meet the battery warranty for a new battery in the next year.
But......, there’s this nagging at the back of my mind that this is my chance. This is my chance to escape. After four years, I could be free and have something new or at least new to me. It’s like when you’re dating a girl and you’re not real sure about her, and then she starts to drift away or wants to see other people. Part of you wants to let her go and another parts wants to hold on.
Disclaimer: I have been happily married for 22 years and this is strictly a hypothetical.
Now, next door to the Nissan dealer is a Mazda dealer. And they have this on the lot:

It’s just under $10k which I know is overpriced. It should really be somewhere closer to $7k. I know all about this issues - the apex seals and compression loss, the oil injection issues, the pre-mixing, the plug fouling, the weak ignition system, the flooding, the steering rack, the premium fuel, the gas mileage, etc. I am a mechanical engineer and I am anal about my cars, so I think I could handle the upkeep. Yet, I know this would be foolish. This is the really hot, yet chronically unstable, high-maintenance girlfriend. How foolish would I be to give the Leaf and its dying battery back to Nissan and instead, put this in my driveway? Could I really daily this thing with the 944 as backup (I still have the 911 as well)?

Yes, yes you should. The problem here is that all of the RX-8 issues you listed this car probably already has and they have not been fixed.

You’ve just made me realize that most people who are the target audience for an electric car (rather limited daily/yearly mileage) are also least impacted by the fuel consumption of their car. Mind = blown (or wobbled, at least).

Yup. I ran into a friend on Saturday. He just sold his business to a large multi-national for God knows how much. He just ordered a Tesla Model X and it will arrive in October.

Ah the eternal dilemma: electric or rotary??? :)

What about buying one with a blown motor and having a renesis rebuilt/modified? Nothing crazy, just without fully minding things like emissions and NVH. Plus you will know the whole history of the motor. I assume all RX-8's for sale are on their last legs haha.

You can definitely daily an RX-8, although the most I’ve ever gotten on a tank was 230-250 miles.
Day to day, its just a matter of remembering the cold engine shutdown procedure (if needed to reposition the car without driving) and being sure to check the oil level every fill up or every other.
Obviously, before purchasing make sure that every single TSB and ECU update has been performed and get a compression test as well.
Also: 9k a day keeps the rotary doctor away. :)

I’m really not looking for a major project. I don’t mind the little things. It is somewhat comforting to know that rebuilds are cheap and easy.

For the RX8, you really won’t know if its a car worth buying until you actually drive it. I always like yellow RX8's though.
It sounds like you already know a fair bit on what to look for on the RX-8, but if you haven’t read my Buyer’s Guide I suggest you do.
And yes, you can daily an RX-8 although you will be spending a lot more on fuel than you would with a Leaf, haha.

Im not sure the list of the failure list people put on the RX-8 is so frequent if the car was used to race. The line of RX wouldn’t still be clamored for if they were as bad as a Yugo. Anyway Im old school oppo so the only electric car Id be recommending is the fast Tesla to go with your fast Porsche. :P

I actually went and drove the car. As usual, it’s a little more sketch than it appears in the pics. The biggest issue is that I think it has been breathed upon.
The clutch was incredibly stiff, but it had no travel and the car had way more torque down low than I remember from the other 8 I drove. The exhaust was definitely not stock either. Fourth gear was also a little crunchy.
I wish Mazda would bring back this design (4 door sports coupe) with a normal engine.
