Looking for some help choosing a racing seat for a DD that will be doing a good amount of spirited driving and the occasional HPDE. The stock seats have my head touching the roof and offer pretty much zero lateral support.

I will be using the OEM seat belt. I have read this may be a problem for some seats. I am 6'4", 32" waist, 175lbs, so I’m fairly skinny. I want something that will lower my seating position, still be comfortable for long drives, but really hold me in corners. Is this reasonable?

*Edit- It’s also a must that they recline!

How much are you willing to spend? What kind of car do you have?

Most racing seats are not built to withstand DD duty. Your options are probably going to be:

Spend an obscene amount of money

Pull a good bucket out of another car, like an Evo seat

Replace them every couple of years

pretty much what Ryan said

I had a set of Evo x recaros’ in my subie, loved them

but then I am only 5'8 (weigth /waist more or less the same as you, you must look hella skinny lol )

I have a build similar to yours. I like the Sparco EVO. Very comfortable even long distance and I remove the 2" thick base cushion during events to wedge myself deeper between the bolsters. It has belt pass troughs for 6 point and a harness bar.

It’s for a Mazda Protege5. I was thinking $400 or less, but I want to make sure safety is a priority. I don’t want the seat shattering in an accident because I cheaper out. I am also losing side air bags, so once again, I want to make sure the remaining safety equipment works well.

To be honest my outlook on this car only goes out a couple of years.

I didn’t know it had a removable cushion, that’s pretty cool. I’ll have to look into that. Thanks!

I’m not abnormally skinny, but definitely slender! How much do evo x seats usually cost second hand?

I’d start checking craiglist for parts cars and see what seats you see and like.

I know I had at one point been looking for a nice set of Merc 190E seats for a fox body mustang project. Was gonna wire them and everything so it had power seats. Anything can be done with creativity and a plan. And a bit of money...

(2-3 years ago) 500-1200 / pair, depends if the side airbags are blown, if blown, could be easily stitched back up (by a shop)

So many cheap options! Do you know how safe they are compared to the other name brands?

With that budget I would look for a single single oem jdm recaro (most are Nissan, Honda & Mitsubishi). Safe & well built, plentiful & affordable.
