Two weeks into daily driving a BMW, I’ve came up with a hypothesis: it’s not that we don’t use turn signals, the automatic cancellation is just too damn twitchy. I mean look:
The smallest return-on-centre cancels the signal already, much less than my Solstice or any car I’ve driven before.
Can’t count how many times I had the signal cancel on me while waiting for a left turn or at a stop sign waiting for a gap...

I see what you mean, but I think at least two blinks need to occur before any turning of the wheel happens.

Funny enough, three blink to pass was actually disabled when I got my car, I had to dig through the settings to turn it back on.

It doesn’t even make a noise when it self cancels. It just stops blinking.

I never really understood the three-blink feature. It feels slightly insufficient to me.
It’s like it’s designed to either give other drivers minimal warning, or for the driver to suddenly whip the car into the next lane. Neither of these seem like good driving habits to me.
My ideal merge gives other drivers two blinks before I make my move, and the movement of of my car from one lane to the next takes another 2-3 blinks.

The turn signal stalk’s switch is more like a power window switch. It’s been fully electronic since the E60 was around...

I found it incredibly annoying when it was three blinks on my Prius.
When I set it to five , though, using Techstream, it became the best thing since sliced bread.

This is just me, but I have never really had an issue with mine. It’s never cut off before I felt it should have and I actually like the 3 blink setup when changing lanes. I understand, though, that not everyone likes how the blinkers are on our cars, so again just my opinion.

It’s just the cancellation angle a bit too narrow, but that could just be me as well.

You’re damn right! Also, the three-blink signal for changing lanes is too quick. I think a reasonable highway lane change takes at least 6 blinks. So this also contributes to the perception because the blinker isn’t on for the second half of the lane change. And if you go full blinker for a lane change, cancelling it often results in a signal the opposite direction. Way too touchy. The other day I was thinking they should make them so they cancel if you tap the *same* direction again.
