Fun fact: the year they started doing that (2008or9) was also when they cut the State Park budget by 25% afterwards. In other words, that extra $5 most certainly did NOT go to the parks. Source: worked for WA State Parks some years ago.

In SC you pay vehicle tax and renewal at the same time. My 85 4Runner is 50 per year and every other year I get charged an extra 25 registration free. The wife’s 2011 Kia is 200 dollars per year.

Colorado bases the cost on the new value and a percentage of that based on its age. A $30k new car will cost $600. My 1978 mini cost $1.74...

How old? In Nebraska it is based on a set valuation based on year make and model, which basically goes down to zero when the car gets to be ten years old or so. The highest is up somewhere north of $500 I think, but even after the valuation goes to next to nothing there are fixed “wheel taxes” and such that still push annual registration for older cars up around $100.
If the car is 25 years old or more you can get a one time historic plate for about $60, but you have to prove you have a regularly licensed daily driver and it is supposed to be limited use, i.E. not daily driven to work. I don’t think that is ever really enforced though.

Ontarian here: I paid just under $300 today to renew my driver’s license for the next five years and renew my vehicle plates for two years. To renew my plates, I had to pay around $35 for a cash grab an emissions test to be able to renew my plates.
I had to do it all this weekend since the cost of plate renewal is going up again in September - it’ll be $240 for two year renewal instead of the $216 I paid today.

It’s going up to $120 to renew the license plate sticker here in Ontario, Canada this year... and $40 extra if you need a new plate.
And if you’re in England and had something like a Ford Focus with the 2L gas engine, you would pay around £210 in tax plus another £55 registration fee... £265 total which is around US$348... for one year.
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-ra…
https://www.energy.eu/car-co2-emissi…
And if you have something a little bigger, like a 2.5L Subaru Legacy, then you’re paying around $427.
And if you had something like a VW Passat CC with the 3.6L V6, then you’d be looking at about US$729
It’s cheap in Saudi Arabia though... only costs around US$40
http://life-in-saudiarabia.blogspot.com/2014/06/how-to…
And in Russia, the registration fee is 2000 Rubles!!!! But in US dollars that’s about 25 cents... KIDDING... It’s actually around US$30.
In Zimbabwe, the car registration fee is US$160... which works out to about 57,900 Zimbabwe dollars the last time they used that currency. The don’t use that currency anymore though as it has gone completely to shit...
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-afr…
So that US$106 registration fee isn’t so bad. But if you want it to be cheaper, you can move to Russia or Saudi Arabia.

The U.K. Has a rather complex system as it’ currently based on CO2 emissions, cars registered before 2010 are taxed on a different system, cars registered between 2007 and 2010 different again. It also depends on what class each vehicle is in as to what emissions it will be taxed on, etc...

I’ve heard about it. And I was imagining how much his car or truck in the US would cost to register in the UK... LOL... it would very likely be in the “Over 255" petrol tax category... meaning it would probably be over £500/year in CO2 taxes alone. That’s why I gave the Passat CC V6 taxation example... heheheh.

Argh, ye’, imports such as the good doctor’s would be tested at a VOSA (vehicle inspectorate) station who will notify the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) of the emissions and what tax band it should be. Grey imports tend to be tested on a one off basis. So Dr Zoidberg’s pickup wouldn’t be as detrimental as an Aston Martin DB9 I saw about five years ago which was £1,000 a year to tax (before last year vehicles had a tax disc displayed on the passenger side window which showed the tax was paid, what post office it was paid at and how much along with the make and licence plate number, now it’ a virtual tax disc an all done on the computer).

> Manwich - now Keto-Friendly

And the UK isn’t even all that expensive in comparison. We only have a one-time (but very steep) CO2 tax on new vehicles in the Netherlands. Ownership tax is based on vehicle weight and fuel type.
A Corolla wagon (closest to that Pontiac I imagine) from the early zeros would be about €600 a year. Your VW CC 3.6 example: €1000 a year. That same CC with the 1.4 TSI: €800, with TDI and 4 motion: €1820 a year (because diesel).
Extreme example of the CO2 tax: Ford Mustang V8 with a manual: roughly €73.000. And that’s the CO2 tax alone, you’ll have to add the vehicle itself plus VAT to that. You’ll end up with a €115k vehicle. Which is exactly the same as what a much less CO2 emitting base Porsche 911 costs after tax.
Manwich - now Keto-Friendly
> duurtlang
08/28/2016 at 11:04 | 0 |
I imagine the Mustang with the 2.3L ecoboost would be substantially cheaper, but still quite expensive.
duurtlang
> Manwich - now Keto-Friendly
08/28/2016 at 11:17 | 1 |
Yes, the Ecoboost costs literally less than half of what the V8 costs here.
(car+VAT+CO2tax)
Ecoboost: (31+6.5+15.5) = €53k
V8: (35+7+73) = €115k
So the Ecoboost competes (in price) with the Audi TT 2.0 TFSI, BMW 430i and Merc E250 coupe.
The V8 competes (in price) with the BMW M4 and 640i, Jag F-type 3.0 S S/C, Merc C63 AMG and the base Porsche 911. And the Camaro with 6.2 V8.
As you can imagine I don’t really see Mustangs (or Camaros) here. Especially no V8 powered ones.

Sort of. The Twingo is on the most modern tax rates so based on CO2 emissions, NA petrols get stung on that a bit other than some newer ones. The bmw applies to the older rates which is anything 1.55 litre or below is £145 then 1.55 or above is 235. Bmw just squeaks into the upper bracket unfortunately.
