I own a 406. That’s a Xantia underneath, excluding the suspension. Does that not count?

I almost bought a Xantia last year. A Xantia Activa even. I already had an appointment to test drive the car.

It being an Activa was the reason I talked myself out of it. It was supposed to be my entry for my cross continent banger rally. I bought the Galant instead of a Xantia because I couldn’t find a good one and the Galant seemed too good to be true.

I still regret it. Not that the Galant was bad, but it’s been a money pit. That €500 car quickly became a €2000 car. A Xantia would’ve been both better/more reliable with cheaper parts and be more interesting.

You’ve probably posted as many pictures as there are Xantias left...

I still seem them regularly, although not as much as the 406 which is still common (wagon/sedan) despite export. It seems to me most cars >15 years of age are mostly gone in Ireland.

Yes, you don’t see pre 2000 vehicles very often (although mine is 1994!)

Blame a damp climate and absence of garages.

I did actually see a Xantia recently.

I remember that. It was a 2.0CT right? But at that price even I would probably have stayed away from what was by far the most technically advanced french production car.

Do all cars rust that badly then? I imagine it’s brand/model specific. Looking at my (2000, 278k km) 406 there’s zero rust. Same thing with the 306 (1997) I just sold. Very little rust on both 205s either (1987 and 1988). Yet, looking at my rally Mitsubishi Galant (1997, 235k km) there was definetly rust. Much less than most other Galants though. The Suzuki Alto (2001) my parents drove until earlier this year started to rust as well.

There aren’t that many garages here either.

No, it was a V6 Activa if I’m not mistaken. I could be wrong though. I later found a CT (non-Activa) that got sold right in front of me. I had already made an appointment, including with a Citroën specialist for a pre-purchase check. Disappointed I then ended up with the Mits lump.

It isn’t officially Xantia day until you make a post proclaiming that it is Xantia day

Well, my FTO is a Japanese market car so little if any rustproofing from the factory and there are very few left now - they all go in the same places and I’ve just had mine patched for the second and probably last time.

I’ve asked Mr Google for the most common test failure items which are:

“The same 4 items keep coming top of the list for failing cars at the NCT each year. These are; the front Suspension, tyres, headlights and brake lines/hoses.”

I guess rust isn’t necessarily the only reason why cars are scrapped- low values, expense in passing the test each year, higher insurance - they all add up.

That second picture, the two-tone one, that really reminds a lot of a Nissan Almera. Like, a lot.

It’s somewhat simlar here though. Take the Galant. It was a car that was well taken care off until a few years before I bought it, and then was run (almost) into the ground. We gave it a little love (exhaust, belts (4!), shocks, brakes, wheel bearing, tires, suspension parts), and it’ll probably be good with little costs for multiple years to come. Had we not done so it probably would’ve been junked. But who spends €1500 in parts/work on a €500 car? Few do.

People just want something fresh and shiny, which results in depreciation so bad perfectly serviceable cars with minor issues end up on the junkyard.

Higher insurance on older cars? That seems odd. My 205s are €5 a month each (classic insurance, I’ll give you that) and my 406 is €20 a month. I haven’t even been driving that long, despite my age.

Car insurance is in turmoil here at the moment for a variety of reasons with premiums rising by large percentages this year. Several companies have announced that they will no longer cover cars over 15 years old.

We’ve had scrappage schemes over the years which had a major impact on the number of older cars.

Former Xantia owner here! I owned a very early 2.0SX – it didn’t have the grille badge, and lacked the anti-sink feature, both of which were added in the first year of the production run.

I only sold it because I moved to the US – it was one of the best cars I’ve ever owned, and I’d have it back in a heartbeat if I could.

My dad too maintains that his late pre-facelift 1.9TD Break was the best car he’s ever owned.
