Assuming there are no hiccups, in October I’ll be headed to the South Yorkshire area of England for a week on business. Not sure how much of this time will be my own, but I wanted to ask the Oppo crowd for good restaurants, cigar bars, things to check out, etc.

I expect that most of my evenings should be free, and I will get bored sitting in a hotel room all night. I’m not looking for anything crazy, just want to know if any of you are familiar with the area. Think I’ll be in and/or around Sheffield.

I was born in Leeds, which is in West Yorkshire. I definitely would suggest taking an evening stroll down the locks, there’s plenty of pubs in that direction.

I am not a UK Oppo, but I would recommend heading to York to see the cathedral and the rail museum. It’s a little out of your way but not too bad.

If you’re into the outdoors, Sheffield is a major center of hiking/climbing/mountaineering. Lots of great trails and scenery around there, as well as some great driving roads. It’s been a long time for me, sorry I can’t be more specific. But England generally has footpaths across fields in every direction, and many of them are public rights-of-way (many times, even when they cross private land). A lot different than the US.

Cometh to York. Which admittedly is North Yorkshire. But we’re nicer up here in the North.

Not sure how much time I’ll have to venture around. The company will likely have someone drive us where we need to be. So I won’t have a vehicle at my own disposal, unless I call a Taxi.

Wouldn’t suggest calling a taxi to take you up to York, it’s about an hour drive and would be pretty expensive :P

If you do find time, take a train, those are fairly inexpensive and also takes about an hour if there are no delays. Naturally, the UK’s best train museum is connected to the train station as it used to be the station’s repair depot.
