And the cars look more like planes than cars.

Instead of complaining about a race series, he should have put all his energy into the company that made the TV remote so complicated that he couldn’t figure out how to turn the channel.

Agree, but here’s my hot take: oval tracks are incredibly lame and boring and rally cross is the ultimate spectator motorsport.

Well, he is an auto journalist so I suppose it might be relevant for him to have an opinion on the subject.

True yet I’d honestly rather attend a Lemons race

The idolatry of money does not exist in other professional sports I agree with Dan Neil.

Except that his take is the general take on F1 these days. The hot take is this:

But you can watch F1 without beer.

I get Neil’s point, and I agree with his criticisms of the pompousness and the obvious funding issues. But the longer I follow F1 (this is year 3 for me), the more I’ve come to appreciate its subtleties. It’s like team chess at 200 mph. There are so many planning decisions and insane engineering details involved. I can’t help but geek out. Yes, it would be more fun with less regulation, but I still dig it.

Rallycross is badass, but have you been to a small dirt oval? There are few things in motorsport as cool as wide open, wheelstanding sprint cars, 3 wide and sideways, right in front of you.

Love me some rallycross, but before you dismiss ovals out of hand, I suggest you go see a winged sprint car race on dirt. It’s a hell of a thing.

Probably every five years or so, I try to get into F1. It never sticks for me. I tried to can, but I can’t.

I’ve been into it my whole life, but have lost interest. I always start out watching the season, but last year I gave up on the last half of the season and this year I haven’t watched the last two races. I had them recorded and lost them to a new DirectTV box this week, and I’m not even mad. I’ll probably watch Spa this weekend just because that’s an all-time track, but otherwise it’s all about WEC & other endurance series.

I watched most of the season two seasons ago. I gave up two or three races into last season. It wasn’t a conscious decision or anything. I just kept missing the race/forgetting to record it, and not caring. Once I missed a half-dozen or so races without caring, without even checking the results, I realized I just didn’t care about F1.

I love sports car racing and IndyCar racing, and any short-track oval on a Friday or Saturday night is a good time by me. I noticed we said nearly the same thing at the same time to the guy who said all oval racing is boring.

I didn’t catch that, nice! Great minds... I was bummed to miss the winged 360 Sprint race at Santa Maria Speedway near me last Saturday, but that was when I took my daughter to Laguna so it was a good trade. There’s one more 360 event before the end of the track’s season, I hope to make that. I haven’t been in a few years, but I grew up going there with my dad and love the place. Something about dirt track cars, cheap beer, and crappy nachos that makes you feel properly American. I love it.

Yes! It’s the best. I don’t get to them often, but I try to go once or twice a year. I saw my first race ever at age 8, a 360 Sprint race, at Wilmot Raceway in southern Wisconsin. My dad wasn’t into cars or racing, but my grandpa’s company (a small regional oil company) was sponsoring a car there, so he took me up. About 20 years later I took my wife and my little sister to see their first races there too. I think I’ll take my oldest next year for her first race. She’s used to going to bed early, so that’s a really late night for her, but it will be a lot of fun.

Yep, sometimes you’ve gotta give them a late night. So worth it.

Definitely. I took her to a local cruise night last month, after she asked me, “Daddy, can we go to a car show today?” It was the best.
