After listening to Steve Lehto’so podcast on CPO does anybody have any suggestions for getting the car independently inspected besides showing up with my mechanic at the dealership?
To answer the other question I am also considering Carmax and a maxcare warranty.

I have, many times, bought a particular brand, say a Chevy, and a Ford Dealership (making stuff up) but I’ve asked and been allowed to take the Chevy over to an unrelated (not the same auto group) Chevy dealer for an inspection. Carmax should have no qualms about letting you do this.

Yeah, this is the same approach I take. I specifically tell them, “I’m going to bring this to my mechanic for an inspection.” If they balk at that, it is not a good sign. Reputable places won’t care.

Outside of Carmax the cpo purchase I am researching is a Mazda but the three closest Mazda dealers are all owned by the same group.

A lot of dealers around here, if the car is used, will let you take the car to your mechanic’s shop to look it over.
The Mazda dealer I bought my Accent from used let me take it to my mechanic’s garage for a thorough inspection.

Well, that doesn’t mean you can’t use them, but if you have an independent shop you trust, or can get a recommendation, you can use them. or use carmax to look at the mazda dealership car. You’re going to pay about $100 (average) but it’s a small price for piece of mind.

Exactly!!!
I’ve never been denied, but if I were it’s a sign to walk away to a different car.

Awesome thanks for the insight, I do know a local mechanic as well but this gives me some more options. I don’t expect any issues since the dealership I have dealt with thus far was the one that Costco referred me to and they seem to have low tolerance for shenanigans.

We bought a 2011 Odyssey from Carmax in late 2014. During the 7-day window, I took it to my local Honda dealer and told them very frankly what I wanted. For $120 or so, they basically found $500-$1,000 worth of stuff that needed to be done, in addition to strong evidence that most maintenance had been missed. We ended up turning the car in and buying from that same dealership, brand new. It wasn’t that CarMax wouldn’t have fixed the problems, it was that those problems never should have passed inspection. So I lost faith in CarMax and would 100% recommend an inspection.

Find a good 3rd party shop who knows the marque, and schedule a pre-purchase inspection. If the seller refuses to release the car for it, walk away. Even if you spend money to get told not to buy a particular car, it’s money saved in the long run. I do them all the time, and sometimes I can call the client within 10 minutes with a firm “No”.

I’m absolutely doing this, I just left a message with an independent shop about this. They handle handles all the fleet maintenance for the company the Mrs. works for and I’ve been very happy with them in the past. If they can’t help me out I am sure I’ll get a couple recommendations.
