The U.S. Navy Blue Angels’ transportation and logistics C-130, nicknamed Fat Albert, loses its paint during a maintenance overhaul. Albert has been grounded for the remainder of the 2016 airshow season due to maintenance needs.

well, its aluminum, so its going to make it’s own thin protective layer in very short order.

Yes, but. Oxidation isn’t always a controlled process, and the depth of oxidation needs to be predictable - aluminum that doesn’t have a polish process done to it can get pitted and very iffy in short order in terms of surface friction and so on. If it was painted (and therefore etched) it could dull up and get nasty.

Note that the radome cover comes yellow from the factory, and they covered it during the paint stripping processes. Can’t paint that.

The composite radome doesn’t need a corrosion inspection. They do paint them though.

I always thought that they weren’t painted because the paint would mess with the radar signals. The more you know....
