It’s the drivers seat in my friends 2012 Acura TSX Sport Wagon. He has no idea how it happened. This happen to anyone or is this a common issue in these cars? I didn’t see anything after a quick google search but this ebay listing has damage in the same area.

Quick Google search for “TSX seat tear” leads me to believe that Acura’s seats are kind of shit.
I also saw this:

Dried out, either from bad leather/whatever look-a-like stuff they use nowadays, or lack of care. Honestly, probably just age and the sun baking it crisp is my guess...

Do you live somewhere hot and is the car parked in direct sunlight? Need to make sure those leather seats get some sort of protectant to stop cracks/deterioration.

Guess they just used shitty materials in building the seats.

He got the car like 4 months ago and it was in a carport for like 2 months now it’s in a garage. He’s in Alabama, but the car was a Texas car before he got it.

I'm not a super leather aficionado or anything, but it looks super thin in both of those photos.

That doesn’t look like real leather. You probably have leather trimmed seats, and the back/sides are vinyl. It will continue to separate from there as the seat flexes.

It looked manmade to me, like vinyl or something.

Texas has some crazy heat. I could see leather cracking if it isn’t cared for and is in constant direct sunlight.
That said, the car is 4 years old. Not cool.

I did think it was vinyl, I can’t go out and check cause it’s not my car and we’re in different states. What you’re saying does make sense though.

I used to live in Texas and I bought a 2012 128i in Corpus that I can deduce was sitting in the sun for the same duration of time, and it had 0 defects in the leather.

You know the history of the Acura? Haha, ask for like $500 bucks back or something to cover the cost of seeing/knowing the seat is starting to go, lol.

I’ve never seen leather that was bonded to a textile backing, so it’s definitely vinyl, unless it’s something like bonded leather or some odd leather veneer bullshittery.

That’s exactly what it is. My office chair looks exactly the same way.

It’s obvious what happened there. This is right where your elbow/arm, while moving, would rub the seat. Tell your friend to stop masturbating while driving.

It’s common on Honda/Acura products. I do interior repairs for a Honda/Acura dealer and see it often enough to know it’s an issue with them. Accord and all Acura console lids have the issue as well. My guess is his right arm hits that spot enough to cause the wear via using the armrest and shifting. An upholstery shop can replace that panel, it doesn’t need a whole seat cover. The sides of those are vinyl, only the surface is leather. Some Honda/Acura products will have the outside side bolster in leather, but for the most part all have vinyl sides and backs.

Cheap fake leathers will do this commonly in high stress/flex areas as they age.

I work for an aftermarket leather shop. It’s industry standard to use vinyl and leather trim - seating surfaces are leather but the sides, skirts, and rear are almost always vinyl to keep costs down. Our all-leather kits cost about 3x in parts what the leather-trimmed kits cost.
This is our pattern for a 10-14 Challenger, and I’ve grayed-out all of the natural hide parts. The rest is vinyl.
That said, Honda used some pretty shitty vinyl from about 2003-13.
We replace between 3-5 center armrests on Honda products every week. The top layer on Honda vinyl was really thin and would tend to bubble at the seams because it couldn’t handle any moisture. If your friend ever let the sunroof cracked, or got in the car while really sweaty, that would start the PVC layer delaminating from the cloth underneath. It’s worse in the temperate rainforest we call the southern Piedmont because of all the heat and humidity.
