Prior to the Challenger accident, NASA intended to fly DOD missions to a polar orbit out of Vandenburg Air Force base in California. Here Enterprise is used to evaluate the pad setup. If you want to learn more about this grab the book Into The Black.

I do need to get that book. I’m about 60 miles from there, know some guys who worked SLC-6, and can see night launches from my house if it’s clear. I really wish we’d seen a west coast shuttle launch, I’d have been there in a heartbeat.
Also, watching Shadow of the Moon on Netflix right now, this stuff will never fail to awe me.

Its a good book. More the human side of the shuttle program. Talks a good bit about MOL and Keyhole as well. Interesting subjects.
