The tach is probably a cable driven unit. Basically, a gear somewhere that the tach cable is connected to, either in the trans or the engine, spins the cable within the cable sheath and converts the rotating motion for it’s attachment point into a rotating motion on the tach gauge (very dumbed-down explanation as the tacho has to prevent the needle from rotating constantly, etc, but you get the gist I hope!).
Somebody elaborate, or correct me if I’m wrong as I’m not super knowedgeable about older car stuff (yet!).

The cable spins to tell the tach how fast the engine is going. The cable is broken. Why the cable is chucked into the drill? Not sure. My guess is he was using the drill to simulate the engine spinning when the cable just came out instead?
This is how I feel almost any time a picture is posted here without explanation. It’s like I’m a bad enthusiast for not knowing every single hyper car and affordable sporty car ever made by sight alone with no badges.
