Edit: we got her started. Checked for spark and it had none, however the hole in the valve cover for the spark plug/ ht lead was filled with oil on one cylinder. We cleaned that our and waited for a while and it fired. So either the oil bath the lead sat in shorted the coil out, or more likely the car had gotten damp while parked on the grass and eventually dried out enough to start while we worked on it.
Schaeffts lincoln mk8 refuses to start. Starter spins fine but no start at all. About to check for spark. It has fuel (because me and 4muddyfeet went to buy some) no idea if thats getting into the engine but doesnt smell like its flooding. Its a 4.6 v8. Any ideas guys?

Lots of FoMoCo cars from that era have inertial fuel cut off switch, you just push it to reset it, it might be located in the trunk near the air ride service switch

Something, something, should’ve bought something reliable and European.
But on a more serious note; there are 3 key things here, right? Spark, fuel, starter. You mentioned them yourself. Double check the former two.

What do you mean the starter spins? Does it turn the engine? Or does it spins on its own without turning the engine itself?
You’re gonna have to check for sparks of the engine cranks, but that doesn’t look very good. Did you guys park the car on the grass for the night? If so it might have not liked the humidity...

Has fuel but is fuel getting there? Does the engine turn but not crank?

This, definitely.

I got nothing but your photo looks like a screenshot from Top Gear.

As previously mentioned, either fuel cut off switch or dead fuel pump. The 4.6l has coils, so it's unlikely none of the would have spark.

They also blow fuel pump fuses in addition to the fuel cutoff switch mentioned below. The cutoff switch is either in the trunk or in one of the kick panels, and the fuse is with the fuses, duh.

That settles it. They should fix it with nothing but a hammer.

Schaefft as in the GTA modder/modeler?

Next headline “On Fire, Now What?” I kid most likely the fuel pump shut off switch as others have mentioned Fotds are known for this.

It is unhappy that you dirtied it and took it off the pavement like some sort of low class truck

Well, your adventure is certainly turning into an adventure :P
Any updates? :O

“Its a 4.6 v8"
There's your problem right there! Shoulda had a Hemi or LS!

That particular 4.6 has 2 coils unlike the later coil on plug setup

Yeah we tried that, no dice. I’ll update the post shortly with what happened.

It was me.
I had just realized my superpowers involving control of machines from any distance. I’m sorry for using you guys to test that out, but I had to be sure.

Curse you sir, you cost us hours of driving quickly on some excellent roads.

Probably one of the only photos in the world of a Skoda and a Lincoln Mark VIII in the same shot.

That was the beauty of our little road trip, such an odd combination of cars.

Glad as is well now, hope you managed to still get on most of your trip! :)
Wish I was in the UK to have joined you in ‘Humdrum’ so I could balance out the collective awesomeness of your eclectic group with the cheapness of my Accent...XD.

Haha youd have been very welcome to join us regardless of your vehicle. Anything can be fun on a good road.

Were you guys camping at an actual campground? Seems pretty empty other than the three of ya! :)
![]() 08/21/2016 at 17:18 |

There was a big group across the field but other than that it was pretty empty. It doesnt have any amenities other than a toilet and they dont advertise so its not the kind of place to fill up fast. But it was cheap and they let us pull up all our cars together and just camp in them. Plus there was a nice little pub closeby.
