I was picking up a package at the UPS store yesterday and this was in the lot. As I was walking in, I saw a man in scrubs walking towards the car. Of course, I figured that this was the owner (scrubs = MD). Oddly, he went right up to the door, stopped and whipped out his phone and took a photo of the inside of the car. Not the car’s owner!
Then after I was done at UPS, on the way out, I see a 30-something woman heading in that direction of the car, and figure that it must be the Prius driver. Nope. She also grabbed a quick snapshot of the car and moved on.
I pull out of my spot and and as I’m leaving the lot, I pause and snap this out the window of my car. (Actually, this is the second time I’ve snapped a pic of the very same car. The other time it was parked at the home just 5 houses down from mine.)
So, why do I (and others) do this? I’m not taking a picture of Bigfoot or an apparition of the Virgin Mary. God knows there’s plenty of photos on the internet of the Ferrari 458. I guess its because we know that we’ve seen something out of the ordinary, something special and we feel the urge to document it. I guess we do it for the same reason we take pictures of the US Capitol or the Whitehouse. There’s no reason for any more of them...its just that we feel the need to have one of our very own.

Hang on a minute. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that exact car too. If this is where I think it is (cross haven drive) the I parked in that exact spot this morning.

I only just stopped taking pictures of normal cars. It just dawned on me that if I want pictures, I bet the manufacturers have full HD pics in perfect conditions with epic backdrops. That said I will gladly snap away at some weird or at the very least unexpected stuff like:

My first thought was. “Really why is he taking a picture of an GM f-body”. Everybody and their brother has one. Then I realized you were European. Weird how we take certain cars for granted. I would be freaking a”out if I saw a vauxhall or a Renault of any kind over here in the states.

I personally don’t often take pictures of exotics unless they’re super rare because, as you say, anyone can Google them since they’ll all be pristine and stock anyways. I only photograph interesting or somewhat weird stuff (to me), like a ‘90s Daihatsu Rocky I saw a few months ago...

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Also, a WiLL Vi in (what appears to be) Europe? Why would anyone ever import one of those? Anyways, the WiLL VS looked about 100x better IMO although it was also more generic.

Truth, Ferrari’s are rare where I live but any GMC is even rarer as the brand is not sold here.

Yup in Europe (that is currently pending though) and because they can. Saying UK import laws are lax is an understatement.

In some parts of the world that kind of mistake would get you killed but then again Australia’s wildlife would probably get to you first.

I am the same way. If a car makes me say whoa or what the hell it gets its picture taken.

The other day I took a picture of a Corolla that had Dodge Neon wheels, just cuz it was something different.

Uh because it’s beautiful and in the flesh vs. on the Internet. That cars color is awesome, rarely see Ferraris in gray. Great pic!

We have a local “car spotting” page on Fb, so usually I’m taking photos of unique cars to share w that group. Sure, anyone could look up pictures on the internet, but always fun to see them “in the wild” in your town.
