Can anyone explain why the Edsel was so hated?

I kind of love them.

Now, if I’d been around in the late ’50s, my money would have gone into a DeSoto FireFlite, but the Edsel is still has its own charm, even with the gaping schnoz.

Was it really hated or was it just a flop because Ford build a car to compete with itself?

They were ugly, had reliability issues, and launched right as a recession hit. Mostly, though, they were touted as some kind of ground-shaking breakthrough in automobiles and turned out to be just a car. They over-promised and under-delivered.

Nailed it!

Although I’d still love one, and would put a huge Procharger behind the schnoz.

A car an Oppositelock reader likes

I think that’s explanation enough for low sales

The Edsel stylists were gambling on a revival of narrow grill design elements and a move away from the existing fin design school toward squared designs with sideways fins and lost big. A little bit too radical, a little bit too early - other brands pulled off parts of that within a few years (or continued what they had been doing) and either soldiered through or reversed.

It was meant to be a car for the LL Bean demographic (SOPHISTICATED LUMBERJACK OUTDOORS MAN), but due to that demographic taking a hit with an economic slump, increased upward movement of the Ford big models and being unsure whether that slotted Edsel right next to Mercury or below it, combined with new car line teething problems (Edsels with parts missing)...

Bottom line: looks + sales mismanagement + vanished market + ordinary Murphy’s Law = no Edsel.

It had a vagina for a face.

Somebody had to say it. But really it was just pointless, since it was competing with Ford’s own cars.

People flipped the fuck out over the front end styling of the ‘58. Early autojourno discomfort with it being kind of awkward snowballed into a Katamari Hate Ball in the auto press and the public at large were put off a bit as well. Which is hardly fair - they were just gambling on one particular take of a return to narrow center grill styles and lost.

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s a LaSalle concept from ‘41 - the sort of thing they were trying to call back to.

A sleeper Edsel would be extremely cool. A blown 410 would make it even cooler.

People think they look good now because we like anything *vintage*, but at the time it really must've been pretty awkward.

yep. it was massively over-hyped, and they tried to wedge it in between Ford and Mercury where there was hardly any room anyway.

There was room when they planned it, or they had reason to believe there was... but fastforward several years into a slump with Ford moving a little bit upmarket, and the market space got #rekt.

DeLorean: ugly car that starred in a movie series which became a cultural phenomenon

Aztek: ugly car that starred in a TV series which became a cultural phenomenon

Math checks out. Give it about 20 years

Now I can justify hoarding ones that have lower mileage and haven't been destroyed by people that buy them with their tax checks.

I am sure it was a combination of issues. But for me it has to be that front design. The rest of the design is appealing but that grill is too much. It is the same reason I do not like the Veyron’s front. I understand the history of their grill but it just ruins the design for me.
