Behold the Majesty of my sick Microsoft Paint skills and answer my poll!
So !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! put this question to Oppo and reminded me of this old thing. Note I don’t remember where I got it but I’ve stuck with it for so long I might as well claim it as my own at this point (don’t sue me please).
Anyway some context:
Driving : You enjoy using your vehicle(s), be it racing, off roading or just cruising just being one with a machine makes you feel whole. You may not be able to keep it going but as long as you are behind the wheel heck any wheel you are in paradise.
Wrenching : Working on your vehicle(s) is its own special kind of ecstasy. You will be dammed if some other mug will keep your joy going unless they are your mechanical superior in that case you will bow down and suck all the knowledge you can.
Collecting : Some other fool can keep it running and even then why go running just for the sake of it, your vehicle(s) are tools but dammit they represent you and what you are. You may be exclusive to one brand, old cars are just your jam or maybe you can’t live without the sun directly in contact with your head. Either way you have your thing and your vehicles will get in line with it.
So pick a number and let’s see where you stand.

can I be like a 1.4 or 4.1? Like, I love wrenching until it’s comfortably beyond my skill level

For now I’m a solid 5 because I don’t know shit about wrenching, nor am I willing to put enough time in learning how to do it. Collecting drivers cars sounds fun, we’ll see when I have a budget for that!

You’re a 4. Loving has nothing to do with skill level.

I have one car. I love to drive it. I do not wrench on it because it need’nt be wrenched on. I do not have the monetary funds to collect diecasts, let alone actual vehicles.

So what constitutes “drivers cars”.

Collecting isn’t literal collecting. It’s more like looking back at your car history as if it were a collection and then assigning them a group. So going by your pic, it could be Mustangs or Fords or just American cars in general.

Not boring to drive I guess? Although I see why that would cover a lot of things. I think my point was to say that I would love collecting cars to actually drive them, and not let them sit. But yeah I’m into sports car as a general thing.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say I find wrenching, “its own special kind of ectasy,” but I do some wrenching and as much driving as I can. I have neither the funds nor the space to collect.

Ah! That’s what I get for not fully reading your post. Though, I think I’m still a 1. My next car won’t be a Mustang and maybe won’t even be a Ford. I guess I like what I like!

I think I explained Collecting poorly. Collecting is more like your style of car choice. So if you were to look back on your car history like it was a collection what kind of group could associate it with. So are the cars you like all Japanese, are they all built after 2004. Are they are 4WD. That sort of thing.

Went with #6, because while on the one hand I’m completely building a car for the 3rd time, I’m building a specific kind of car and definitely have my favorite qualities... and the end-game is in sight. Have ludicrous car X, rub car X inappropriately while muttering “huehuehuehue”.
I mean, I like driving, but I have to ID things correctly, and it *is* largely about having the car.

I think that is what Wobbles was getting at. There is a distinction from enjoying driving and just enjoying cars for what they are.

Admit it, you never want it to be done. You love getting hands on and surveying the surroundings of your nirvana.

If something makes a car more interesting, from where I sit it doesn’t even matter that much how it affects how it drives. Conversely, if something is boring through being overdone (standard Civic performance suspension overhauls) it doesn’t really get my attention. That should highlight where my priorities are - also my preference for older cars is in kind of a feedback loop with that.

Driving 110%. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy wrenching on a car and I’m sure I’ll try and get more collector-y someday, but driving is where I really have some fun.

Same as Clemsie, there’s a reason I went for electrical engineering instead of mechanical. Just you wait until those autonomous and electric car bugs show up, that’ll be my time to move towards 7!
And yeah, given unlimited money and garage space, I’d stock up on all kinds of roadster, but realistically, it’ll be limited to one fun car and perhaps one bike for the coming years/decades.

I am a definite 4. Sure most of the time I am just enjoying my time driving. But I really like taking my time wrenching when I have to and I am not opposed to working until 1am in a parking lot just to get something done. My reasoning for always changing my oil is not for cost or to make sure its done right, but just because I enjoy doing it. Seems like a lot of people agree with this philosophy!

Mostly a 4, but with a bit of 3 thrown in just for the sheer number of vehicles I own.

I drive/ride/race it until it needs wrenching....or until I get my tax refund...or if I get bored

Very much a 1, trying to become more and more of a 4, with long-term aspirations of 7.

I’m squarely a 4. However if there were more zeros in my bank account I would be a 7.

i think i can almost be stuck at 7, i spend way too much time collecting bits for the next project, that may or may not happen, and have a way too big collection of parts for them.........and working on something myself, is THE only way to go......... do pretty near ALL my own stunts, with the exception of auto transmission rebuild....... have seen them done, and surprisingly it wasnt that hard....... and driving, its not where you are going, but HOW you get there, the trip itself, is IT.......... and if you are on the trip, in something that you built, with the collection of parts that you rounded up.......... well thats the trifecta.........
