Third time this week I get the “gearbox failure” message and the transmission goes into limp mode (3rd gear). It only happens when downshifting on inclines, never on level ground. If I restart the car, the problem goes away.

Time to sell the Citroën and finally get the [insert name of unreliable European car here] you constantly post.

It may be a simple solenoid or something that needs to be replaced, something that “forces” the downshift. They can get stuck.

I sure hope so, this stuff should not happen on a 50k kilometer car.

If I ever replace the Citroen I’m probably buying a Legacy

I believe the preferred term is going “on strike.”

I only use premium fuel and wash it once a week. WHAT MORE COULD IT WANT?

If that’s the case you better get this gen.

Nah, 2.5 GT.

It wants a 30 hour workweek, monthlong vacations, and four sick days per week. It also thinks that premium fuel is for the bourgeois.

Yeah, but I’m 4 years out of warranty, not sure there is much they could do for me other than charge 1 million dollars for a rebuild.

Hmmm, sounds like something “simple”, like a sensor...?

Hopefully, still need to take it to my mechanic, did not have the time to do it.

Wait, that’s French?
I have 9 weeks of paid vacation a year and am not French. To be fair, I work more hours than what they pay me for (40 versus 36).

It’s weird you have that many problems with a car that isn’t known for being troublesome. Anyway, who’s the manufacturer of that transmission? ZF?
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

This is the first actual problem (apart from that wheel bearing at 25k kilometers)
It’s a ZF 4 speed, quite sure it’s the ZF 4HP20

There’s a chance it’s not the transmission itself. Trans internals could be OK but there is a wiring issue/solenoid issue, etc.

If you have the second generation C5 in the picture, don’t you have the six speed? It’s by Aisin.

It’s a 4 speed. But there is no info on 4 speed 3rd gen C5's, every single C5 that came to Brazil is a 4 speed.

That’s odd. I suppose it’s a cost issue. ZF haven’t made four speed fwd boxes for a long time so I suppose it’s from some other supplier.

I’m guessing it’s the ZF because they used it on the 406 until it’s demise, on forums they call it AL4, but that’s almost meaningless.

According to Google, it’s actually by Renault and is also called the DPO. It’s also notoriously unreliable I’m afraid.

The C5 only really works in Europe, and if that... My neighbour had a 1st gen and it was constantly having issues, it looks cool when it’s raised up though.

When us Brits go on strike, we make signs and chant things, when the French do it, there’s guaranteed to be at least a riot and a fire. The French are the world leaders in striking.
