The only reason I’m using bondo is because it’s what I have.
I hate it.

If you’re just roughing it out at this point, feel free to use a heavier grit. Use a finer grit to prepare for a paint ready surface or for a skim coat.

What grit are you using?

I use a file to get the worst off then varying grades of sandpaper to finish. If like me you always apply far too much the file makes much quicker work of it, just be careful you don't take too much off.

Time to fire up the torch and get a stick of lead...
Alternately, less silly possibility, get a power bondo file (linear sander). They go for like $80.

Might want to start with 36-40 and move to 80 later.

I wouldn’t mind learning how to do lead. Just without all the lead-iness

Incidentally - point of trivia - large portions of the Berlin wall are silly hard. Not much sand, lots of cement, very solid. Other egresses out of East Germany were somewhat hit and miss, but they wanted that thing to last.

What Crowmolly said, essentially. Start at a 40 grit, work up to 80, finish the filler with 180, then move on to icing for final shaping. And god bless you if you’re doing it by hand. DA/pneumatic file board for cutting that stuff, the icing should cut fairly well by hand.
Also, how thick is the filler application?
(I totally replied to the wrong person, hopefully Aperson sees this ; ; )

We use it on stuff for shows, repairing things they want to use for next year if it’s an annual thing. We used orbital sanders mostly, never put more on than you have to!

I just changed my W123 windshield yesterday, the original says Made in West Germany, I am sad I don’t have West German glass anymore.... The new one is super clear though...

File the excess off first, then sand smooth.

what are you sanding it WITH?????......?????.......... i usually cheat, and get the coarsest wood file that i own like this one except old.......(coarse cut carving file)
usually i dont need it......... the trick, is to get the metal REAL close to where it needs to be, and when you lay on the bondo......... you use the biggest paddle you can find, and you press it on REAL hard, so its real thin........ if you do things right you only need a real light sanding......... i usually end up using the large file, and another smaller, before i lay on a BUNCH of coats of high build primer to hide all my cheating........ i take the time THERE, blocking out the primer.........
like Rover said lead is best........

Depends on the brand, I think some are easier sanded than others.
