Does it become mocking and condescending?
The Spanish posts and language and banners, that is. Am I the only one with a bad taste in their mouth over it? At some point it crosses the line from a respectful tip-o-the hat to full blown ethno-baiting, playing on the stereotype that the company is so ethnocentric that it is unwilling or unable to accept the status quo of the corporation it just acquired.

Univision is as American as baseball and apple pie and failing public schools. They just are a primarily Spanish-language media company.

I’ve been curiosily watching. What if BET bought gawker? Could have gotten really ugly.

Actually, right about now
I know that I would certainly be insulted
Like Latins don’t understand cars?

I’m pretty sure it was from the beginning. The Spanish language banner doesn’t bother me, but alot of the posts are pretty racist.

I think it’s awesome (Edit: The purchase). I honestly think our odds are better now than they would have been with the other option, but I’m just speculating on Univision being the more forward-thinking and fast-growing behemoth. If we stand to benefit from the growth of Hispanic and multi-ethnic households and media consumption, then I’m totally on board. Univision were longtime customers of the bank where I used to work, their reputation was solid. I think a lot of the comments today are more self-deprecating "Lo siento, no hablo español" comments rather than any kind of ignorant stab or criticism at others. But I'm known to be a little too innocent in my judgments...

Re: the banner - we sought out some input on the translation as a tribute to Spanish-language media.
And yes, it is absolutely possible that a post/comment could cross the line. We’re keeping an eye out for such things and as always, please help with flags and emails if you see something that doesn’t sit right with rule #1 and specfically violations of our rules against racism.

I’ve been busy in the office today and not sure if the posts you’re referencing have already been cleaned up, lmk what you’re referencing and we can bring it to the mod squad.

This one immediately springs to mind. It’s based around the assumption that Univision are a Mexican company because they cater to a Spanish-speaking population and that all hispanics are Mexican which I guess more ignorant than flat out racist, but definitely icky.

Thanks, I’ve asked OP to change the title.

The whole point of the acquisition is to enhance their English speaking audience so I think it would be better to not have it because we want to please them so we can stick around

Well, first of all, we’re not “Latins.”
And there are already quite a few of us Latinos here on Oppo. But Univision didn't just buy Jalopnik, they bought the whole Gawker Media kit and caboodle.
