So this morning on NPoCP, we were presented with this:

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

(Full disclosure: I voted CP)

While I was looking at the CL listing, I noticed it was at a dealer called “Big Man Motors” in MN. As I perused the listed inventory, I noticed that they have a interesting collection of vehicles with high miles, salvage titles, and/or “FRESHENED UP WITH A PROTECTIVE LAYER OF BLACK BED LINER”. Say what you will about this questionable combination, what stood out was their honesty (for a dealer, relatively speaking).

Shortly thereafter, I noticed an Opponaut was considering a “beater”.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

As I multi-tasked with work and my cellphone, the light bulb went off: beaters fulfill a need and this dealer is being honest about their beaters! And why aren’t more “Buy Here Pay Here” business more open about what they have? And why does Minnesota have something that Indy doesn’t have? (ok, not really on the last one).

I was really digging their selection: a running Ford Escort wagon for $500, Dodge Ram trucks with bed liner covering the inevitable rust, Buicks with 3800 Series II V6's, etc.

TL;DR: I really dig this dealer and maybe you will, too!

Which car would I pick from this dealer? Not sure, but I have a top 3: Jaguar X-Type, Buick Park Avenue, and a Mazda Protege 5MT for $850 — with tasteful bed liner applied.

Manual makes it better, but I’m digging the old J-pattern tranny.

Maybe this.

Maybe one of the numerous Accords (but not the V6) or Camrys.

I’d go for the Saab or maybe the Pilot. I don’t know much about pilots but I have to imagine it has life left considering it’s a Honda. The X type would be more tempting with a manual, the auto slowed those cars down a bit and wasn’t terribly reliable. Also, that m3 is tempting.

I agree with you that honesty and realism is a good sales tactic.
