These images are to scale. Just something to ruminate on.
The Renegade is exactly as long, 4 inches wider and 2 inches taller than an XJ cherokee. It’s also 200 lbs heavier, has 2 fewer cylinders, 1.6-2.4 fewer liters displacement, 10 less hp, and 45 less lbs-feet of torque. It has either 1 more or one fewer forward gears but substantially worse crawl ratio.

Stop making me think about the XJ all the time, dammit!

Celica?
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:33 |

I’m afraid that is no longer valid.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:34 |

Shocking! That is substantial growth.
What about fuel economy and crash safety?

“what do i do with this? Can I eat it?”
So when do you get an xj?
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:35 |

I’ll end up in some old Toyota no matter what I say...
ANYWAY good post.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:36 |

Up, I'm sure. Massively on the crash safety front. You can barely fathom how much safer modern cars are than ones from the era of the XJ.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:37 |

Safety? WAAAAAAY safer. Fuel economy...not much different to be honest. maybe up 2-3 mpg average, great but not amazing.

The new Cherokee is as big as my 4runner.

yes, the XJ was designed over 30 years ago... 166" length is pretty small for any SUV
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:39 |

That’s something to think on.
I wonder if this is more of an indictment of FCA than the whole industry.
Anyway, so you have more of these pictures? Like a lot more? Please say yes.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:40 |

I chose 167, since they kinda went up and down in length over the years, but yeah...its very small. Its kinda amazing that a 4.0 ironblock I6 AND straight axles fit in there.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:40 |

I just made this, I should do more.

If I had to say anything negative about the XJ, it’d be thats its a little tight on head room and the rear door is small. So really, good job Jeep!
Otherwise the XJ is perfect. Just clarifying.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:44 |

Yeah, getting in and out of the back was a little tricky

Yes. Now please.
All corvettes, miatas, civics, accords, mustangs, and people.
You've got a busy evening ahead, can I get you some coffee?
![]() 08/16/2016 at 18:47 |

Yup, bigger on the outside, less space on the inside. Same story with the 5th gen 4runner, almost identically sized from the outside as my cruiser, but SOOO much smaller inside.

May as well get the two door
![]() 08/16/2016 at 19:31 |

Not much difference in fuel economy? Maybe if you only drive downhill with a tail wind in the XJ.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 19:35 |
|
That's why you just drive every and get one after your past the point of helping children get in.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 19:39 |

Funny, I thought the same this weekend when I saw a new Subaru Outback next to a vintage Cherokee
![]() 08/16/2016 at 19:56 |

And which one is more attractive, fun to drive, and bullet proof?
The overheating, death wobbling XJ in my driveway of course!

funny things happened as I went home today
![]() 08/16/2016 at 20:19 |

The XJ is tiny, but I always knew that. It’s funny how perspectives on the size of cars changes.

I owned an XJ, and I got 19 mpg daily average ( looks like the average here is 18 )and low 20's on the freeway no problem. Looks like the BU trailhawk is averaging 23-24 . So yeah its better, but its not night and day.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 20:50 |

You can get the Renegade with the 1.4L turbo which averages 29 mpg and can easily hit over 30 mpg on the freeway. That 2.4L engine is a bit of a dog.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 21:34 |

Yep. And visibility is much better than the new Cherokee’s I imagine.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 08:40 |
|
Yeah, I always thought the Renegade was the actual Cherokee successor. But then, an XJ’s not a real Cherokee either, so it’s fine.
![]() 09/26/2016 at 22:31 |

But you should include some of the Renegade’s positives
-More reliable
-Warranty if it isn’t
-Safer
-Better fuel economy
It’s also probably quicker than the XJ as well.

I rember a few years ago driving behind an XJ and an Edge, and realizing how stupidly fat and tall the Edge was.
![]() 09/26/2016 at 23:56 |

I thought it was kinda weird when Jeep classified the Renegade as a subcompact SUV, I mean the thing looks bigger then an Rav 4.
![]() 09/27/2016 at 00:12 |
|
More reliable? not a chance in hell, not unless you mean an old used up xj to a brand new renegade...even then its a tossup.
Safer no question
ditto economy
Power to weight is better in the XJ
![]() 09/27/2016 at 00:26 |
|
Definitely not more reliable than a 4.0.
Also the Cherokee had a warranty at some point so I’d say that’s rather moot. In a comparison of both vehicles brand new, I’d take the Cherokee 10 times out of 10.
![]() 09/27/2016 at 01:21 |

That’s 20-30% better!
![]() 09/27/2016 at 09:06 |

Headroom. I’m 6'2" with a 30 inch inseam and I have plenty of headroom in the Renegade even with the seat lifted the whole way up.
My sister has an XJ (96 Cherokee Country 4-door) and it’s downright cramped for me. I have to lean the seat back a bit to fit.
![]() 09/27/2016 at 09:09 |
|
That’s real-world fuel economy for a highway drive. Cruise set at 65-72 depending on the road.
Typical commute - mixed driving - fuel economy is between 26-28.
I don’t know anyone who has an XJ with the 4.0 that got better than 22 any time.
![]() 09/27/2016 at 09:10 |

And the FCA 9-speed auto basically sucks.
![]() 09/27/2016 at 10:10 |

23 vs. 19 is a 21% improvement. Maybe not “night and day,” but pretty significant.
Edit: Just realized how late I am to the party in posting on this.

FCA basically sucks.

I’ve never noticed until now just how weak the belt line is on the Renegade. It looks like a sunken mattress.
![]() 09/27/2016 at 15:38 |

-More reliable
I was going to argue that...but I’m not sure. Old Chrysler quality vs FCA quality... *shudder*

What’s down is towing. I love the look of the Renegade; I have no kids, so size doesn’t bother me. But I occasionally need to tow more than the 1,500 lbs it’s rated for.
![]() 09/29/2016 at 12:04 |
|
Yeah, those transaxles don’t like high loads. Its a bummer because 1500 lbs is pretty pathetic.

XJ’s can do 5k at 12 MPG ;)
