Once this has cured it’s onto 2 courses of bricks, then trying to source some reclaimed 4x2 :) also, bonus pics of my wreck of a gt6 shell...
Yeah. That’s why this one’s not getting rebuilt :S the only part that’s in half-decent nick is the roof, which still has a couple of rust patches (and a spawn of the devil webasto sunroof)...
Oh, and one of the things i picked up on my round trip was a fibreglass bonnet for my Spit Slant :) starting to look slightly more like a car!

How’s the BX doing? Something with the suspension needing some work I imagine, as the rest is as straight forward as a circa 1990 car can be.

Yeah there’s a leak on the return line from the rear suspension. It’ll likely be a really easy fix, but it’s tucked up above the rear beam and I can’t actually see it. Little nervous of dropping the axle in case I pull the high pressure lines and break something.
Still, I do just need to pull my finger out and do it as otherwise it’s running perfectly :)

That’s the downside of these things. Without the degradation of those lines these diesel BXs could be kept up with nothing but very basic maintenance. How many kms/miles on the odometer?

172k miles I think :) not bad tbh, and it really is just bits of the bodywork and this hydraulic line that’re letting it down. The rest has been solid!

Not that much either. The diesel BXs I’ve seen all had more. The one I had last year had 323k km (201k miles), which is still less than the one my parents had when I just had got license (15 years ago)

Nice! Glad to know if i fix the rust it should outlast me!
I don’t think i’ll ever sell it while i’ve got space. If i drive it for 4 months out of the year it pays for itself in fuel savings compared to any other car i have :)

Damn that car is crusty, though the roof looks weirdly solid, compared to the rest of the car. Too bad the sunroof means you need to do more work to it.

Yeah I never get the idea of sunroofs in general, let alone aftermarket ones that you have to hack a hole in the roof for. Just opens another avenue for rust.
The roof is oddly solid, or at least more solid than the hardtop I’ve been repairing.
I reckon it’s been parked for a decade over damp ground, maybe on grass or something that would hold the moisture under the car throughout the day :S

Yeah, I never got the idea of them either, until my dad got his new 308 SW company car with a glass roof which extends up to the rear seats. It is amazing to be able to look around that much, and it really gives a nicer amount of light in the car, even with the blind closed.
Damp ground would be my guess too, maybe combined with a tarp over it, keeping the moisture in even more.

Yeah I can understand it making the cabin roomier, but there’s two issues I have with it on a GT6.
First off, why not just get a Spitfire and have a proper convertible. Second, in a Spit/GT6 it’s more of a cockpit than a cabin so it wouldn’t really make any difference!
Unless it was a tall bloke driving it and he needed to poke his head out the top to fit in!
I think you’re on the mark with a tarp as well. There’s telltale scuff marks on the corners of the roof as if coarse fabric’s been rubbing on it in the breeze.
