She found out her Mazda 2 needed an alignment at her last oil change, and never agreed to it being done. She went up to pay and the alignment was on the bill with the oil change. She said “dafuq is thiiis?” the girl then proceeded to give the run around about how they assumed she would want it done and just added it to the bill.

She of course was going to get it done just a piss off that they just go ahead and do it. Another fun fact: the car shakes like a dog pooping razor blades over a 100 since the alignment. Lumpy going to have to loose it I think.

Doing unsolicited work is such a bad business practice.. But they all do it. And I hate it, especially as a car savy person. I know what sort of things need immediate attention, and what I can hold off for a little while.

That sucks. I had a horrible experience here with a dealer as well. How much will it cost? "30 bucks" oh ok go ahead. "That'll be three hundred bucks".

Don’t know about Canuckia, but in the US they have to have consent, and you could have refused to pay. In either case, paying defuses that somewhat, I think (ask Lehto?), as it implies consent to what they did after the fact.

Take it back for an alignment and wheel balance for no charge because its not aligned previously from the unauthorized alignment. Also, call Mazda Corporate and give them the dealer name. Corporate will come down like a hammer for making unhappy customers.

Ya they did do the alignment for nothing after she blew up on them, just frustrating it has to come to that.

I hate mechanics like that. It sucks that you cannot trust a lot of the shops in the industry. I am lucky enough to have a mechanic who I can truly trust. When I dropped the Mini off at the shop this morning I told them to take a quick look at the AC to see why it’s not working and fix it if it is something simple. I know they aren’t going to just go ahead and replace a compressor or something. I honestly wouldn’t even trust your shop to be able to fix it properly.

We literally JUST talked about this in a parts & service meeting at work. Yes, unless the repair order is documented with written consent and initials of a requested estimate for repairs, a shop cannot perform the work. WI state law, and I’m sure they vary state to state a bit.

Was going to ask how the hell you got that thing over 100 mph but then realized you probably meant KMH

America makes you sign a thing which can force the repair shop to call you ifthe repair will cost more than X amount of dollars

The tires are actually from Costco so they want her to go there to get them balanced, but I think they should do it there since they got caught being shitty

Maybe if I threw it down a hill, but yes its in Canuckistan.

Ya I think that’s the same here. They only charge like 30 for the alignment if you are getting the oil change

I remember getting the ‘It’s not safe to drive’ spiel the first time I ever took a car to a tire shop..

Thankfully my Dad was standing there with my 16yo self and said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’ I ended up learning how to do balljoints in the backyard instead.

I would fight with them, they decided to mess with it, now they have to take responsibility.

My Hyundai has around the same power as the Mazda2 and it can hit 100mph, eventually. Don't ask me how I know.

If possible, check to see if they also rotated the tires on their own initiative. I once had a guy rotate my tires and I didn’t check afterwards. He swapped them left-to-right, and within a couple hundred miles of driving they were ruined, with just the symptoms you describe. My fault for not checking, I guess, but I ended up throwing a couple hundred dollars down the drain.

This annoys me when garages do this. Usually to young girls who they assume don’t know what’s going on.

It’s not difficult to call up and ask. My local garage does and it’s a really appreciated, even though I trust them to do the work that’s needed.

Went to get an alignment the other day and they tried to talk me into doing a 4-wheel when I just asked for a front, and said they would need to charge me £40 extra to take off and re-fit the tie rods I’d fitted. Got all ‘congratulations on losing a customer’ on them :)

Should have looked them in the eye and said “You assumed I would agree to have it done, now you assume the cost of the unauthorised repair”

Then pay for just the authorized services, leave, and never return.

Since they did assume the cost in the end, and only made things worse I’d cut your losses and go elsewhere to have it addressed. Bringing it back just gives them more opportunity to screw up more stuff, intentionally or due to their negligence.
