As a kid, I always thought my uncle was a bit crazy when he’d drive through the night to get the family places. Now, with kids of my own, I realize the man was just ahead of the curve. Northern Virginia to southern North Carolina, here I come. Time to toss the kids in the car. Wish me luck.

Driving at night is the way to go even without kids. Less traffic and no eye strain or sun glare.

Growing up we always travelled at night. Roads were clear, dark outside so it would encourage me and my sister to sleep, etc... Sure in the U.K. motorway services are reduced as most close their restaurants, etc... after 8pm (even now close to most do), but you could always use the toilets and find a motorway petrol station to get a drink or somewhere to merely stretch your legs every few hours.

In Saudi Arabia and Cyprus it was better to travel at night anyway because travelling during the day was a snails pace cluster-f**k.

Not too bad, is it? 6-10 hours I imagine, depending on how straight your route is? Just be sure to drink tons of coffee, tea, or even Coke or whatever if that’s your style. Just make sure to have a LOT on hand if you’re using something sugary. Otherwise you’ll crash in more than one way.

I typically use Dr. Pepper because I hate coffee and cold tea, and it’s too hot for hot stuff. I’ll have a sip every ten minutes or so, and it works pretty well.

I did the whole drive at night thing when my kids were younger. The last time I did it, I drank 4 red bulls in the last 4 hours of the drive to stay awake. Was sick as a dog for about half the next day. We leave early in the morning now and plan the trips to avoid hitting cities during rush hours.
