I wasn’t trying to make light of it or swing to one side or the other. I was just trying to shed some humour on the theme of the day based on something that within the current events of society that most people would get the reference too. I don’t claim to know enough about the topic of Black Lives Matter to discuss it at length but will not delete something meant as a joke because it was taken as a statement to some.

Just because something is a joke to you, and just because you are ignorant of the history and context of “Black Lives Matter” to the POC community doesn’t mean it’s ok for you to keep this shit up after it’s been explained to you not only by me, but by a mod, as well. (Yama is a mod, in case you didn’t know).

I’m reposting this comment as a new comment, Lumpy. Oppo has a policy against racism. Dismissing this comment, which I made in good faith, and with utmost politeness, is not ok. You’re actively silencing the voice of a person of color giving you a criticism about a racially sensitive topic. That’s not being excellent.

Lumpy, this is not ok. You’re making light of the language used by American POC to describe a pernicious and as-of-yet unaddressed issue with police brutality towards POC.

As a POC myself, who has seen the language of protest too often appropriated by privileged persons over the last few days and weeks, I really must strongly object to this.

Not knowing everything about a topic doesn’t make me ignorant. I understand the premise and understand why its a terrible thing.

I’m not going to discuss my views on BLM because really they probably line up pretty closely with yours. I will not take being called a racist for a joke I made. Just because something is said as a joke, but the intent is taken a different way doesn’t then mean I meant it like that. It was meant as a joke and nothing more. Is it a bit tongue in cheek to make a joke about it, of course, but it was never meant to offend anyone. You or Yamahog. I don’t see the mods around here as something to be feared and if I get kicked off this place for making a joke so be it. Not a place I wish to be, the mods are supposed to keep this place excellent, and I’m sorry that the both of you didn’t find this excellent. I won’t post anything political here again since people become offended. I don’t just mean this situation since its happened before.

I understand what is happening to people of colour with police and just because I am a white male doesn’t have to make me the enemy. Probably best if we just delete this and I post a list of rust spots on my Sonoma.

Way to make this conversation all about you and how put upon you feel for being criticized. That’s classic derailing.

If you really understood or sympathized with BLM then you would have a better understanding of why jokes that use the struggles of POC to make the punchline is not ok.

Do I think you are a racist? No. Which is why I worded my original comment to you the way I did. (I’m sure you’ve seen me use alternate, less amiable tones with other people I’ve criticized).

Do I think this post, and your insistence that it’s just a joke, and how it sucks for you to be on the receiving end of criticism is racist? Yes.

You can be a progressive person and still occasionally have a lapse of judgment. I’m imploring you to learn something from it rather than to focus on yourself, or implying that you’re going to pack up your toys and head to a less controversial sandbox.

I have learned that Oppo is not the free speech place I thought it was. The conversation moved me as I felt I was being personally attacked. The main rule is be awesome to each other and I guess posting something that was never meant to target anyone or any group can be seen as not awesome, though it was never meant to be. I see that it was shortsighted and understand why people may take it the wrong way. Everything can be joked about and will be at some point, its up to people to see it for what it is.

I apologise to you and Yamahog personally and to anyone else I offended. I will not be replying to this post anymore as I feel anything more will not be constructive though I will read any replys posted.

This is perhaps what is the most frustrating thing about these conversations. It’s not about being personally offended. It’s about calling attention to something, that for many people (definitely a huge chunk of that 98 percent of Oppo) is an oversight because it’s something you don’t have to deal with on a daily basis.

I get racist and sexist shit nearly every damned day of my life. Just this morning, for instance, a white man made a racist comment to me while I was at the gas station. It was unprovoked. I was sitting in my car minding my own business at the time (though, there’s few ways to justify such a comment even had there been any “provocation”). Less than two minutes later, as I walked inside, I saw a local public official. He proceeded to say “Hello beautiful! Want to make my day?” and then proceeded to kiss me on the cheek.

Within a five minute time span, I experienced both racism and sexism. Though neither experience was welcome, I wasn’t “offended.” It is what it is, and all I can do is help educate people about why both of those situations are not acceptable.

I’m trying to come up with a comparison I can offer that will help explain why this also isn’t a case of someone taking your post “the wrong way.”

In Oppo terms, think of it like the jokes we all make on here about non-Oppo approved things, like automatic transmissions or Fiesta sedans. (Bonus points here because I drive a Fiesta sedan with an automatic transmission). People can joke all day long about both and it’s ok because there is literally no harm coming from it.

No one has ever been denied a home or auto loan* because they own a Fiesta sedan. No one has ever been prohibited from eating in a certain restaurant or attending a certain school because they own a Fiesta sedan. No one has been denied a job because owning a Fiesta sedan sounds “too ethnic.” Nobody has been lynched from a poplar tree because they own a Fiesta sedan. No one has ever been beaten in school because the name of their car, Fiesta, is Spanish, and Spanish isn’t allowed. No one has ever been followed around a store by Loss Prevention employees because they own a Fiesta sedan. No one has ever been given a longer prison sentence after being convicted of a crime just because they own a Fiesta sedan.

No one has ever been silenced because they own a Fiesta sedan.

I don’t have time to be offended by every minor occurrence of racism. I value my cardiovascular system and anger and stress do nothing but increase the likelihood of a heart attack and atherosclerosis. I am not about that.

But the minor occurrences, taken cumulatively, do add up to an overall culture of systemic racism. The minor occurrences serve to perpetuate that unjust system, so I will speak up every time I see that shit here on Oppo. It’s not a condemnation of you, it’s an attempt to effect change.

*Speaking of racist practices in lending: I was actually part of a class action lawsuit against my auto lender, which was found guilty of engaging in illegal practices when extending auto loans to people of color. In 20-fucking-16 (well, 2012, actually, when I took the loan out), I was treated differently by a financial institution with a nationwide presence simply because my last name has an accent and my skin is brown.

That is some straight up bullshit.

I know I’m contradicting myself typing this already and am not going to act like I understand any of the struggles you go through daily. I am blind to a lot of the struggles people go through as a white male living in Canada and I think what you are doing to help people understand is huge and have learned from it.

I see your frustration with the system and somewhat feel it was indirectly pointed at me, or I took it as a personal attack (probably the later). I understand what I made a joke about can stir up a lot of feelings in people and assumed (ass of you and me, I know I know) people would just find the humour and not read into it. I’m not saying you shouldn’t get upset because it was a joke, just saying that I never meant to remind you of a system that screws with people in so many horrible ways.

I am now better for this and hope you don’t hold a grudge.

Also Fiesta Sedans aren’t alllll bad :)
