1) When stopped or in slow moving traffic in 100+ degree weather, it runs hot. Not quite overheating hot, but enough to warrant concern. I’m going to flush the coolant system and re-fill it. I’d like to install the newer 98-02 higher flow radiator fan, however I believe it draws more current than the 96 fan, so I’d have to uptake some wiring. I’d also like to get the Roe Racing fan controller so I can lower the temperature in which the fan switches from low speed to high speed.

2) Paint is in overall good shape, buy could use a good detail finished off with a ceramic coating.

EDIT #2

3) There are 2 mesh pockets in the headline and 1 in the center console that have an elastic band at the edges...in 20 years these have lost their elasticity and are saggy and crummy looking.

Things that WERE wrong that I’ve fixed

1) Oil Pressure idiot light always on. Car had oil pressure - the car has an actual gauge that reads pressures. Ended up being a faulty pressure sending unit, coat about 8 bucks for a new one.

2) Sporadic CEL. Ended up being an exhaust leak between the drivers side Cat and the rear o2. Previous owner had high flow cats welded in - weld job was awful...there were a couple holes that were causing the leak.

3) Dash was scratched to hell. The coating on the dash of the 96 and 97 Vipers is a very soft, rubbery finish that scratches if you look at it wrong. Found a NOS dash and replaced it.

4) A/C no worky. Replaced the o-rings at the compressor, replaced the air dryer, and recharged the system. Blows nice and cold now.

5) Window shuttle broke and window fell down into the door. Pain in the ass to replace the shuttle, but it was cheap.

6) Gas cap was heavily oxidized. It was clear coated aluminum with brass pins. The dissimilar metal accelerated the oxidation. Stripped the cap, polished it up, and replaced the brass pins with aluminum pins that I fabricated from round bar.

7) Crank/harmonic damper bolt was loose. The crank is not keyed and the bolt isn’t reverse threaded...common issue for the bolt to come loose. This can destroy the crank snout if the damper moves. Fixed this with some red loctite, the Roe Racing pin kit, and an ATI damper. Pain in the ass job, but cheap fix and got to it before it did major damage.

8) Wasn’t a problem yet, but would’ve been eventually - plastic power steering pulley and pot metal bracket. Replaced both with nice aluminum ones.

Edit:

9) The inflation bulb for the driver’s seat lumbar adjustment was long gone and the passenger’s side crumbled in my hand when I went to remove it. Replaced both with eBay special inflation bulbs - they’re the same ones used for blood pressure cuffs.

10) Lug nuts were all mismatched, old, and crappy so I replaced all 24.

11) When replacing the lug nuts, 1 of the wheel lug bolts broke off, so I had to replace that, which was a pain as you have to remove the hub to do so, despite the service manual stating it’s not required.

How long have you owned it and what percent of that time was it out of commission due to repairs?

Depending on year and mileage, you can find them for just over 30k in great shape.

I’ve had it for 2 and a half years, I have 2 other cars that I daily drive, so when something breaks, there’s not any immediate urgency to fix it. I’d say it’s been down for 2 months, primarily due to the crank bolt issue. I chose not to pull the hood off to do the repair which made it far more difficult and time consuming. Also blew through several drill bits trying to install the pin kit until I discored cobalt bits. If I had to do it all over again with the knowledge I gained, I could get it done in a weekend. Everything else was fixed in a day or less. Overall cost for all the repairs was something like 600-700 bucks. Did all of the work myself.

Blue with white stripes was only available in 96 and 97, they also command a premium over all the other colors.
