Has it been bullet-proofed? I hear they are known for head gasket and EGR problems. from what i’ve read on these, with an egr-delete kit and a set of head studs, they will run forever.

Since it’s up-there in mileage, I’d guess that everything has already been done to bullet proof it.

At those miles, it either has, or it is one that has avoided those problems.

‘Tis true. I’d still rather an OBS 7.3, but clean OBS trucks are pretty rare.

I would avoid the 6.0L at all cost! There is a reason it is known as the worse diesel Ford had ever made.

Either find a 7.3L or save your pennies and get a 6.4L or better yet a 6.7L.

The 6.4L wasn’t perfect but was a hell of alot better than the 6.0L.

You must have to be real desperate for a diesel if you buy a 6.0L powerstroke.

Kinja'd!!!1

Not necessarily. If they’re bulletproofed, they’ll last forever. This one has obviously had something done to it to make it last 250k.

And Navistar built the engines, not Ford.

if it has any ( any) mods or tunes underhood. I would think twice. Then think again. And think one more time. Unless you have evidence that it’s been “bulletproofed” (including head studs) it’s a total crapshoot.

otherwise your eyes will water when faced with a head gasket replacement.

dude trust me, all of the no! My dad has had a fleet of Ford super duty trucks from the late 90's to today (commercial A/C company in the hot Texas Gulf Coast). Guess who is the one that maintains them :] I’m telling ya homie from experience.

No 6.0!!!!!!!!!!

There is a reason my dad still has his 7.3 over the brand new trucks in the fleet.

No, those were just random trucks that I had no intention of buying. As they were all too far away.

Kinja'd!!! EL_ULY > jkm7680
07/27/2016 at 17:44

Kinja'd!!!1

They had over 100 brutal K miles but that was mostly because of the distances of the jobs down here, Believe me when I tell you that they were long gone before they got up too high in mileage. It was cheaper selling them and buying a bunch of late 90's trucks from a wholesale lot in cash than to keep the new at the time 6.0s in the company.

I know a few people who have bought these super cheap and just fixed the known issues. They’re fantastic engines after you fix them, and most people are too scared or uninformed to rectify these well understood issues. Buy it cheap. Fix it. Enjoy.

Ya, no problemo. Someone else already said it, but it’s likely this one’s already been fixed. I don’t have enough experience to know how to tell, but I’m sure the internet has all the answers! The most important thing to keep in mind is that if it hasn’t been fixed, you must fix it before you can trust it. After that, it’s good to go!

Lifting the cab off these isn’t nearly as bad as it looks. I’ve lifted the body off our old 7.3 Super twice.

That is a pretty sweet truck. I love that generation’s lariat interior. My only real advice is to holdout for a 4 door. My 7.3 extended can is a great truck as long as I’m alone and the road is smooth. Nobody is comfortable in that back seat and the doors all rattle on bumpy roads. ( all of the Ford extended cabs I’ve had have been the same). 6.0s are kind of a crap shoot, if you get a good one it will be the best truck you ever have, if you get a bad one you will stop being a diesel guy pretty fast. Whenever I get an unfamiliar 6.0 i usually let the guys drive it until it breaks then do everything at once. Usually head gaskets, studs, egr delete, new oil cooler while you are in there, get the turbo clean and fixed or replaced if it needs it. Vgt parts are usually worn on our trucks. I will say that 05 to 07 trucks are a lot better than the ‘03 and ‘04 trucks. Turning radius is so much better on the coil spring trucks.

you’re really underselling it. It’s not “scared” or “uninformed” to want to avoid a truck which will need the engine torn down, re-gasketed, studded, and a bunch of costly aftermarket hardware just to be reliable. Especially since most of us don’t have the space or equipment to do so. I sure as heck don’t have a lift; hell, I didn’t even have a garage until last November.

Kinja'd!!! jimz > ceanderson920

the 6.0 Powerstroke was a piece of shit. For multiple reasons:

1) Navistar needed a new engine to replace the 7.3 (T444e) and since they could earn emissions credits towards the upcoming 2008 standards, they rushed the 6.0 (VT365) into production.

2) the T444e/7.3 had six head bolts around each cylinder, the VT365 had four. Plus, the VT365 was the first application of torque-to-yield (TTY) head bolts. This meant the VT365 was an inherently weaker design.

3) The VT365 also introduced a variable-nozzle turbo, which was prone to coking up and sticking. I remember walking through the warranty center and seeing pallets of returned turbos.

4) The VT365 had the second “generation” of the hydraulic-electronic unit injection (HEUI) system, and it was prone to failing injectors and dying fuel injection control modules (FICMs.)

5) in order to compete with GM’s Duramax, Ford wanted to push it up to 300+ horsepower, where no Navistar application was more than 260. This added more stress to the weak engine design, which led to head gasket failures.

6) The VT365 moved the high pressure oil pump (HPOP) from the front of the engine in the valley to the back. so this means when any of the head gaskets or HPOP fails,

7) you need to pull apart the entire top end of the engine. and with how tightly that engine was crammed into the Super Duty, the easiest way to work on it was to lift the cab off of the frame.

I’m not saying there are no good 6.0s out there. there probably are. It’s just untrustworthy and a total crapshoot.

I've been browsing around my area lately for a later 6.0 4door short bed and I've been finding some in that price range. I'm hopefully holding out for a lariat with engine problems and ideally a 6 speed tranny for a good deal. I'm not in any hurry though, my 7.3 keeps plodding right along approaching 300k miles.
