When I left Fresno at dawn, it was just under 70 degrees on a day that will top our around 107.

I got out of my car is Salinas, 135 miles away, and it’s 55 and foggy. Here are some pics from the drive.

You think that’s wild, do the drive from San Jose to San Fran.

So these little guys are used to shift trailers around a lot.

There’s a huge bakery in my town that has a few of these to schlep trailers from one part of the factory to another. They’re Ariel Atoms of the tractor trailer world.

Several years ago, I went from St Petersburg to Miami to play a show in February. We left St Pete all bundled up as it was 40 degrees out. Had to change to shorts and tshirts in Miami, which was 95 degrees.

Now THAT is the sign of a low-humidity climate. At least you can do stuff in the morning and it feels nice. Our daily highs are 95-98, nightly lows 78-80. The morning is arguably the worst time to do anything because the humidity is highest. I love central CA. Say hello to John Steinbeck for me!

I just passed through Salinas on Sunday coming home from the Sierras. 101 crosses the Salinas River a few times and runs along it for quite a ways down to Paso Robles, and seeing it dry always makes me think about the lush descriptions Steinbeck used for it in Of Mice and Men and other works , and what it must have been like then.

Indeed they are. This is why I came down through the Bay and 101 after cooking in the mountains last weekend, instead of I-5. I love the Sierras, but after a few days in the heat it’s nice coming home to fog.

I know that 100+ degrees is rough, as my Miata broke down in Tracy (102 degrees) last Saturday, with my Mom in the car. . .
