Iwent down to the local tire service place because I thought my TPMS sensor was acting up. Turns out there was a nail in my tire.

Here’s a TJ I found at the lot of said shop.

For all the complaining, in the eight months I’ve had my TPMS-equipped car it has saved my ass a couple times and behaved perfectly with my wheel swapping.

So I assume you don’t have a TPMS with the RFID sensors inside each rim. I hate those things. I have one. No false alarms, but it does add $200+ to the cost of a wheel swap unless you just want to live with the idiot light. I much prefer the simplicity of the rotational-based TPMS system.

I do, and I did have to pay to get the new set of sensors. Still, they work. When you’re already paying nearly a grand for a new set of alloys, $40 a corner for new sensors is not the financial breaking point.

Good point on the price relativity. I still just hate that the RFID system has to exist when "wheel rotational speed method" is far simpler and lower-tech (albeit less accurate). You only have to be a few pounds low to set it off, but if all the tires are equally low, it might not trigger.

True. Most people don’t think about their TPMS sensors unless the sensor battery runs out and triggers the light, which is just training everyone to assume the sensor isn’t working rather than their tires are low.

Or if you park outside, the first sudden drop in temps tends to set it off. Our Honda service department was bitching about that last fall..."looks like it's dropping into the 40s, get ready for all the TPMS visits in the morning!" That's better than Takata airbags, speaking of keeping things in perspective.

Ah, yes. Welp, my TPMS sensors work, but my airbag is going to shoot metal shrapnel into my face if I get into a crash. Sigh.

BMW is way down the priority queue for that recall, so none of the dealers around me have the parts yet. There’s a non-zero chance the car will be traded in before I get it done.
