2001 VW Sharan

It’s the 1.8T, and I don’t know much about those motors? Are they reliable? The fact that they’re turbocharged makes me wary.
Anything you can tell me about those cars is greatly appreciated.
I know that earlier Sharans were cars of 2 million and 1 niggles, has that improved with the facelifted model?

Anything from 2000 to 2005 VW are not known to be the most reliable things out there. Then again I would not touch a Shaman with a stick so.... :)

The diesels seem to be reliable but honestly I dont know much about the petrols, I rarely see them. It seems like every other taxi in my uni city was a diesel Sharan.

I’d strongly suggest getting a 1.9 TDI because it seems to be really reliable while also being economical. My Dad sold his facelifted Seat Alhambra with 230k kms on the clock and not a single engine or electrics related problem. The interior was roomy and great for hauling Ikea furniture in the back. I remember the ride not being the most comfortable on bumpy roads, but it was still acceptable.

I've never not known the 1.8t models of any VW of that vintage to not have issues. Not limited to the engine/transmission. Electrical gremlins throughout. I'm in the US if that makes any difference

Going from a Toyota to a VW is a very bad idea. Especially in the price point and age you're looking at. Find something with a good service history and well cared for the fewer owners the better.

If you want reliability and petrol, the only option is the 2.0 8V but i’d expect that to be really slow

You can’t just take some straight from a Toyota to a VW. You need to ease them back into unreliable transportation. Try a Korean car or a Ford. Once they get comfortable there after a few years, THEN they can go german.
