“Nutless.” If you were a fast car that didn’t look it, then I’d name you “Toothless.” If you were an unreliable car bought at Carmax without the warranty, then I would name you “Dougless.”
This is a pretty enjoyable economy car though. The base model needs a usuable power band, fewer gears, and a much faster revving engine. Even with the powertrain doofiness, I’m genuinely curious about the Turbo version now since after driving this one it seems like that would be too much power for the little guy. I can see why Hyundai is pushing this thing to be as relatively big of a niche hit as the Kia Soul.
If you bought a Veloster Turbo, you have my kudos. Plus, my phone fits perfectly in that cubby between the jack covers. That won a lot of points.

Hyundai/Kia are basically doing what Scion did but doing it better in every way with the Soul and Veloster.

I wonder how it would be with a manual. Automatic minis are pathetic due to the fact the engine makes basically no power below 2000 rpm (and really livens up above 4000) which is where the auto wants to be. With a manual you can leave it beween 2000 and 3000 which gives you enough power and then you can drop a gear and really take off.
Also we have the same phone, mine doesn’t fit anywhere in my car though.

I saw one parked next to my WRX this afternoon. It's nearly the same size with less seating room and less horsepower. Doesn't seem like a good combination.

I don’t think so. I’ve used the paddles, the sport gate, and the pure auto. The power feels like it is entirely between 4,800 rpm and 6,000 rpm. The engine is too loud over 3,000 rpm and dead past 6,000 rpm for a manual to even be worth it unless it’s a 5-speed. I genuinely think this engine is made for a 4-speed plus an overdrive gate.

Yeah, that’s my thought too. I like the fact that it’s actually an oversized subcompact coupe rather than an undersized compact. I understand the critiques now.

I think for a modern car the turbo is severely lacking in the power department.
I liked these for about 2 weeks when they first came out. Then I saw them in person more and realized what a mess the styling is. I do enjoy the overall shape though.
