Today at work I parked next to a Mazdaspeed 6. I used to have a Mazdaspeed 6. I got rid of it because it was rusting in many places including the rear wheel wells. Out of curiosity, I took a peek at the rear quarter panels on the MS6 I parked next to, and here you have it.

Have had my 3 for 3 years so far and still haven’t gotten any rust on it. I’ve seen a lot of old rusty Mazdas, but I’m guessing they fixed the horrible rusting issue when they switched the new SkyActiv chassis designs.

That’s a possibility. I’ve heard various things about they finally got their rust-proofing act together with the 2nd gen 3 and 6. But time will tell on how they last.
My ’06 MS6 started rusting in 2010. I got rid of it in 2013.
I just got rid of my ’05 Grand Cherokee that I had as a winter vehicle, and it was rust-free. Mid-’00s Chrysler is by no means a good example of build quality and yet it was doing fine with several more Wisconsin winters on it than that MS6.

We got a lot of salt-filled winters up here in Western New York, but I also take my car in for a touchless wash once or twice a month as soon as the plow trucks start.
So yeah, I guess time will tell.

When I bought my 06 3 last August, it had rust in the rear wheel wells, but that was it. After washing it faithfully all winter long, I crawled under the car to do the first Spring oil change and there was rust everywhere. Kinda disappointing, but I knew it was a risk going in.
My brother’s 01 MX-5 is a total rust bucket, too.
The only cars I see on the road with as much rust as contemporary Mazdas are Daimler-era Mopars. Durangos and Caravans seem to have it the worst.

I will never not post this whenever someone mentions Mazda and Rust.

All 3 of my Preludes have some rust in that area. The 5th gen is the worst, despite being newest, because it was originally a rust belt car.

This is something zee Germans get right. My ‘03 325 is driven all winter and has lived in the northeastern US almost all its life. It has no visible rust anywhere on the body, save for the underside of the front lip of the hood when you lift it up. That I will touch up with... anything because it’s not visible on the outside of the car.
They did, however, make some of their factory cooling components out of “papier-mache” or some comparable material.

Indeed they did fix their rust issues with the second gen cars. I haven’t seen any in southern Ontario with rust, including mine. They even use brine up here on the highways.

Ok, but the newest Prelude is from 2001. My MS6 was rusting by the time it was 4 years old.

I’ve got about that much on my new RX-8, autobody guy says it needs new arches, which was definitely not what I expected them to say. Rest of the car is spotless. I had a Mazdaspeed Protege once-upon-a-time, zero rust aside from rock chips.
