Any horse racing Oppos out there? I’m procrastinating at work. This is on my desk. It is a first place trophy won by Weekend Playboy, my aunt’s horse, in 1996. Horse racing is a rich man’s game, and my aunt was anything but. She had a small, 10 acre ranch, and a few horses. She lost money for years. Then in her 80s, right before she had to give it up, Playboy won at Hollywood, and twice at Santa Anita. She got her moment in the winners circle. We should all be so lucky.

My favorite horse name she ever had was Irish Gambler, but he never won shit.

My parents use to race standardbreds, that was a while ago.

My great great grandfather raced thoroughbreds and won the Belmont Futurity around the turn of the 20th century. Newspapers at the time of his premature death noted how much money he spent on racehorses in return for only modest success, so clearly that endeavor went well... The ranch was sold sometime in the ‘30s, I think, but we still have some old paintings and photographs of the horses around, including blurry, grainy photos from the successful Futurity race.
