I figured it was about time for a small update on the Mali. Its been hard to find time to work between the new job, the new deck, and live in general.. But there is progress!
Firewall is almost done. After a bad batch of putty that had to be scraped off I have the first coat down and ready to sand.
I also began putting some more patch panels into the car. With a little teaching from an actual welder I’m starting to get a little better.
Can you tell someone who knew what they were doing did that patch?
My patches are slowly getting better
Still a long way to go, I need a few more hours in every day to finish this up.
I also got a nice present from my BIL as he was cleaning out his storage shed.
A nice set of original 15x7 rally wheels. I will need to get some new trim rings and caps for them but a little paint and they will be good to go.
Hopefully next time I write a post it will be a little more detailed.

I love you username. I have been finding so many awkward repairs on this car. Did you know you could use lead flashing as a floor? or recreate a whole quarter panel out of bondo? I certainly didn’t.

That ... is ... amazing. Also some how just realized you were in Canada. The end goal of the Mali is to take it from Mass (where I live) to Alaska via the NWT and all of Canada.

Mass. would explain the rust. Or just the passage of time and getting a chevy wet would do it too. We’d thought of driving it to Oshawa, ontario to the factory this summer, the 50th anniversary. Looks like it won’t happen as summer is getting behind us already. Stop in on us in Sask, and make sure you see Winnipeg on a sunday night, It’s where the car people live.
If you end up on the trans-canada highway, at least out west know this: Putting up the hood of your classic malibu on the side of the road will attract farmers wanting to fix or troubleshoot it for you, just beacause old car. Bring a trailer, carbs, starters bumpers etc, will come out of the woodwork at country gas stations. We just love a good sensible chevy out here on the flatlands.

Good to know, the plan is take the Trans Canada Highway for most. And yes the car was built in Maryland and spent its whole life in the North East. Rust is a bit of an understatement. The plan for the drive is still about 3 years out so plenty of time to plan. Rough estimate is around 11000 miles round trip.

We typically drive through the u.s. midwest to skip Ontario. Ontario is FREAKING HUGE. wouldn’t be a relaxing drive, my original brakes, inline 6 and sketchy handling are better suited to the praries. But I do want to cross Canada in an antique car someday. Have never had old malibu in the mountains, where it could use an extra forward gear, bigger brakes and a v8.

Well the Mali will have : Full disk brakes, 4speed OD trans, V8, Modern suspension, air cond, and hopefully Fuel injection and a Ford 9" rear end by the time I go. I picked most of the suspension based on the fact that I want to drive mountains with it.

Very cool!
I’m putting 15x7 rally wheels on my ‘71 (picked them up a while ago at a swap meet) and am currently (slowly) refurbing original center caps. I have the middle part done as good as they can be without re-chroming, just need to get the time to finish polishing up the dishes.
