Assuming you drive less than 6000 miles a year, don’t mind the $25/year additional fee and don’t want them personalized. This is a big win as the Corvette Club I’m a part of really got this done and I am extremely happy/proud of the work. Also happy that I can now run just a rear plate legally.

Beginning July 1, 2016, some South Dakota motor vehicles will be eligible to display South Dakota’s new rear only specialty plate.

The new plate, which is being implemented as a result of 2016’s House Bill 1164, will be available to qualifying special interest vehicles. To qualify for the new plate, these vehicles must be used only for recreational use, while accumulating less than 6,000 miles per year.

“The special interest license plate allows car enthusiasts to display a rear plate only, while also being ambassadors for the State of South Dakota,” said Lisa Weyer, Division of Motor Vehicles director. “The design was a collaborative effort by the DOR Division of Motor Vehicles and the car club representatives.”

Those who receive the special interest vehicle plate will still have regular registration fees along with an annual fee of $25.

I love being in a state where this is a non-issue. I also love that my 4Runner’s tag is like $40 total.

SD is pretty cheap all around, including plates, I have no complaints.

In Virginia, the only time you can have a rear-only plate is if you’re registering an antique and it doesn’t have a spot for a front plate.

“Unless the vehicle was manufactured for one license plate only, you must display license plates on the front and the rear of your vehicle.”

Awesome! Not sure if I’ll ever take advantage of it, but it’s nice that we have the option.

Also, it looks much better than our new plates because our new plates suck.

Ya I don't really like the new plates all that much, They sort of look like Iowa and Minnesota's.

Great! I drive more than the 6k miles but I am glad its a option if I ever get anything that I only drive on the weekends.

Here in Wisconsin we’re supposed to have front plates, but I’ve been running without one for 3 years now with no hassles from the cops. Front plates are so ugly and so hard to keep from getting mangled.

I’d never live in another state again that requires front plates. It ruins the looks of the car, and it is just a scheme for the govt to increase revenue.

That’s the main reason I don’t like them, Iowa’s and Minnesota’s are so close that it’s hard to tell them apart quickly.

I don’t really get the people who hate front plates (aside from a very small number of cars where you get the buck tooth look).

It would be interesting to see a state offer Euro sized plates for cars that were designed for them (though I don’t know if there are Federal requirements for license plate size). That would solve a lot of the issues, since they’d fit correctly on the bumper instead of overhanging.

Corvettes, specifically C6+ don’t really have a place for one, so they look bad. That’s it, no other reason really lol.
