I’m in Los Angeles. Google Fiber isn’t coming anytime soon, and I don’t want to go back to Time Warner, but I’m running out of options.

Is this a flashback post from 2002?

Wow, we pay like $20/month (it’s bundled with our satellite TV, so it’s hard to say exactly how much it is) for 30Mb/s.

I use a local company called Sonic, who are based in Santa Rosa. They have DSL, Fiber to the Node, and in some areas Fiber internet, but as of late my internet has been terrible. On good days, I would get 6-7 Mbps. The only reason I stayed this long was because they have good customer service, but now there’s absolutely nothing I can do to improve my speeds (even if I move up a tier).

And I thought I was doing poorly with this:
There’s one carrier in my area. They offer two internet packages, “yes” and “no”. “no” is free (yay!) but doesn’t include internet (boo!). “yes” costs $70ish/month.

I have Sonic, and it’s not great but it’s good.

I know, thats why I haven’t left them yet. When my service is going at peak speed, its solid, and their customer service is great, but I can only restart a modem and router so many times before weeping in a corner in frustration

I pay like $14,000 a year, hard to tell what amount goes towards internet out of tuition.
The NC state University system maxes at like 100mb/s.

Damn, that’s a bummer. I hear great things about MTS all the time, so this is kind of a surprise.

It’s just cause I live in the middle of nowhere. They’ve got more options in most other places, but where I live the population is about 20 people for 3/4 of the year. Something else that may be of interest is that MTS was very recently bought out by Bell, but that hasn’t affected much of anything... yet.

Damn the CRTC for not blocking that deal. Fingers crossed things don’t get too bad.

I was on Bell mobility for a few years while I was living in Saskatoon, and it wasn’t bad. Then I moved back here and after about six months they cut me off from their extended coverage, so I unfortunately had to say goodbye. I’m tentatively optimistic. I had to deal with MTS quite a bit at work this winter, and they never really seemed like they were in a rush to do much of anything.

Our family has never had a great time with them as a provider. We’re with Rogers since at this point, it seems to be the lesser of two evils. I just don’t like companies monopolizing the market.
